Women's Basketball Travels To George Washington Saturday

The Flyers And Colonials Tip-Off At 1:30 p.m. ET

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will start a two-game road stretch with George Washington University Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton travels to the nation's capital with a 3-16 record on the year and 2-6 Atlantic 10 mark. The Flyers have lost four in a row and seven of their last eight. UD is 1-6 on the road this season.

Head coach Tamika Williams-Jeter is in her first season in charge of her hometown Flyers, coming over after a year at Wittenberg. She has assistant coaching stops at Kansas, Kentucky, Penn State, and Ohio State.

As a team this year, the Flyers are averaging 65.4 points per game and giving up 70.9 points to opponents. Dayton is shooting 40.3 percent overall, 34.3 percent from three point range, and 71.7 percent from the free throw line. UD is the top rebounding team in the league with a +5.2 margin, but is committing five more turnovers per game.  

Dayton is led by senior Mariah Perez with 11.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game while redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon has a team-high 12.6 points per game. Senior Sydney Freeman is chipping in 11.0 points each outing and leads UD in made threes this season.

SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
George Washington returns to the Smith Center for just the second home game in the last five contests. The Colonials sit at 13-8 overall on the year and 5-3 in conference play. GW is 7-2 at home this season and on a two-game winning streak.

Head coach Caroline McCombs is in her second season at GW, coming over from Stony Brook after seven years at the helm.

As a team, GW is scoring 66.2 points per outing and holding opposing squads to 62.3 points per game. The Colonials are shooting 40.1 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from behind the arc, and 69.5 percent from the charity stripe. GW benefits from positive rebounding and turnover margins as well.

The Colonials are led by Mia Lakstigala with 14.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while Nya Robertson is contributing 12.7 points and Mayowa Taiwo is adding 8.7 points and 9.8 rebounds each outing.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton hosted Duquesne Wednesday and suffered an 87-79 loss to the Dukes despite scoring a season-high 30 points in the opening quarter. Sydney Freeman and Nayo Lear both had 17 points each while Mariah Perez had a double-double.

George Washington went on the road and earned a 75-61 victory over Loyola Chicago on Wednesday. The nationally televised contest saw the Colonials outscore the Ramblers 29-15 in the second quarter and never look back. Mia Lakstigala had a team-high 19 points while Mayowa Taiwo had 12 points and 19 rebounds.

SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and George Washington have played 48 times previously with the Colonials holding a 33-15 series advantage. Last year's meeting was canceled due to COVID protocols, but the Flyers have won four in a row including the 201 meeting in D.C., 67-54.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
As a team, Dayton ranks 33rd in the country in rebounds per game and 40th in defensive rebounds per game. The Flyers are also 68th in three point percentage and rebounding margin. Individually, Mariah Perez ranks 25th in the nation in offensive rebounding while Destiny Bohanon is 47th in minutes played.

FREEMAN GETS 1,000TH POINT
Senior guard Sydney Freeman reached the 1,000-point mark in her collegiate career with a made three at the 2:55 mark in the first quarter of the game at Toledo on Dec. 11. She needed just three points entering the contest and finished the night with five points.

DOUBLING-UP
Senior Mariah Perez already has six double-doubles this season, giving her seven for her career. She recorded double-digit points and rebounds in games against Northern Kentucky, Kentucky, Florida, Fairfield, Davidson, and Duquesne already this season. On top of that, she was one point shy of three more against Ohio, Fordham, and St. Bonaventure.
