Women’s Basketball Loses On The Road At George Washington

The Flyers Drop Their Fifth Straight

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team traveled to George Washington University Saturday and suffered a 71-57 loss.

The Flyers (3-17, 2-7 A-10) continue their losing skid while the Colonials (14-8, 6-3 A-10) help themselves in the league standings.

KEY MOMENT
1st quarter – 2:53 to 0:15 - GW used an 11-2 run to storm back from an early deficit and did not relinquish the lead the rest of the game.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 12, George Washington 21
  • The Flyers were the first to strike with a steal and finish from senior Sydney Freeman.
  • The Colonials answered with a three at the 7:45 mark to take their first lead of the game.
  • Dayton pulled out to an 8-3 lead by the 6:00 mark thanks to a four tough paint points from senior Mariah Perez.
  • GW got three free throws after getting fouled on a corner attempt and converted with 2:19 to play to take a 13-12 lead.
  • The Colonials used an 11-0 run to push their advantage to nine in the final minute while the Flyers went almost three minutes without scoring.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 23, George Washington 36
  • The Flyers broke their scoring drought on the opening possession of the second quarter with a three from redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon.
  • The first four baskets in the quarter were a pair of threes from each team.
  • By the media timeout, the Colonials held a comfortable lead at 29-21.
  • Another 6-1 run for the hosts got the margin to double-digits.
  • Freshman Nayo Lear had a team-high seven points to lead UD while sophomore Arianna Smith added five points and nine rebounds.
  • The Colonials had a 19-6 points-off-turnover advantage and eight fewer turnovers than the Flyers.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 41, George Washington 50
  • GW drilled a pair of threes to start the half, adding to its lead even further.
  • Lear had a pull up jumper, followed by a steal on the in-bound and layup for a big four-point stretch for the Flyers. That gave her double figures for the game.
  • Midway through the third, Dayton faced a 45-30 disadvantage.
  • Lear scored 11 straight points for the Flyers from all three phases on offense.
  • UD closed the gap to single digits in the final three minutes of the quarter while holding GW without a point for over three minutes.
4th Quarter: Dayton 57, George Washington 71
  • The Colonials struck first in the fourth quarter to push their lead back to double figures, but a three from junior Taisiya Kozlova was the Flyers' answer.
  • At the media timeout, Dayton was running low on time and trailed 59-47.
  • Kozlova hit another three out of the timeout and made it a nine point game once again, but GW responded with a three of its own.
  • The Flyers were just unable to climb all the way back and fell to the Colonials on the road.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
11 – Nayo Lear scored 11 straight points for the Flyers in the third quarter as they pulled back within single digits. She finished with a team-high 18 points despite leaving early due to an injury.
17 and 12 – Arianna Smith had a career-high 17 rebounds in the contest, the most for the Flyers this season. That went along with 12 points for her second double-double of the season.
45 to 39 – Dayton out-rebounded GW 45-39 in the contest.
17 to 6 – The Colonials had 17 assists to the Flyers' six assists.

KEY STAT
18 to 12 – The Flyers committed 18 turnovers that turned into 19 points while forcing only 12 turnovers from the Colonials.
