Men's Basketball Edged At Northwestern 71-66

Flyers Erase A 10-Point Halftime Deficit But Can’t Overcome Wildcats On Their Homecourt

EVANSTON, Ill. – In a game filled with runs, the University of Dayton could not find a last final spurt to get a win on the road at Northwestern, falling 71-66.

DaRon Holmes II led UD with 17 points (15 in the second half).  Also in double digits for Dayton were Koby Brea with 15 points, Javon Bennett with 12 and Nate Santos with 11.

Dayton is 1-1 on the season, while Northwestern is now 2-0.

GAME RECAP
First Half – Northwestern 35, Dayton 25

•    Northwestern scored the first seven points of the game.
•    Javon Bennett, making his first start as a Flyer, got Dayton on the board with a triple three minutes and two seconds into the game.
•    A 6-0 UD run at the 4:53 mark gave the Flyers their first lead, 25-24.
•    But those were the last Dayton points of the half, as Northwestern scored 11 unanswered points before the horn.
•    The Wildcats scored 26 of their 35 points in the paint and shot .625 (15-24) from the field.  The Flyers shot .409 (9-22).
Second Half – Northwestern 71, Dayton 66
•    UD outscored Northwestern 13-3 in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the second half to tie the score 38-38.
•    That included a personal 8-0 run by Daron Holmes II.
•    The Wildcats answered with a 6-1 spurt to make it 44-39 with 13:19 left.
•    Dayton followed with an 11-4 count to take a 50-48 lead on a Koby Brea and-one with 9:52 remaining.
•    Northwestern used a 8-1 run to regain the lead, 56-51, two minutes and 10 seconds later.
•    The Wildcats led by seven (62-55 with 4:29 to go), but the Flyers were able to get it back to a two-point game (67-65 with 23 seconds left), but the 'Cats scored four more points (all at the line) to Dayton's one to reach the final score.
•    UD shot .706 (12-17) from the field in the second half, including .700 (7-10) from three-point range.
•    But Dayton did commit 10 turnovers to only one for Northwestern after intermission.

BY THE NUMBERS
•    3 – Offensive categories DaRon Holmes II led the Flyers in – Points (15), Rebounds (7) and Assists (career-high 6).  Holmes made five-of-seven FG, two-of-three 3-pt. FG, and five-of-six FT.
•    4 – Number of three pointers (in six attempts) that Koby Brea made.
•    41 – Points Dayton scored in the second half.
•    .538 – UD's FG% for the game (21-39).
•    .552 – The Flyers' 3-pt. FG% in the contest (12-23).
•    ,800 – Dayton at the line at Northwestern (8-10).
•    16 – Assists on UD's 21 made field goals.

UP NEXT
•    Dayton will travel to Charleston, S.C. next week to play in the Shriner's Children's Hospitals Charleston Classic.
•    The Flyers will open with LSU on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. ET.
•    Other teams in the tournament are Houston, North Texas, St. John's, Towson, Utah and Wake Forest.
