CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Dayton men's basketball team could not overcome an early deficit, losing to the sixth-ranked Houston Cougars 69-55 Sunday in the championship game of the Shriners Children's Hospitals Charleston Classic.
Dayton was led by 
DaRon Holmes II (16 points), 
Nate Santos (14 points) and 
Kobe Elvis (9 assists, zero turnovers).  Santos was named to the all-tournament team.  The junior forward averaged 17 points a game in the three games, which included the game winning three-pointer in UD's 70-67 victory over LSU.
Dayton is now 3-2 on the season, while Houston is 6-0.
GAME RECAP
1st Half – Houston 36, Dayton 28
•    Houston scored first and then Dayton tied the game at 4-4 with 17:49 left.
•    The Cougars went on a 10-0 run to take a 14-4 lead with 14:09 to go.
•    UD pulled back to within four( 19-15) on an alley-oop dunk with 8:55 remaining in the half, but UH scored the next seven points.
•    Houston's largest lead was 12 (30-18) at the 4:37 mark.
•    Dayton shot .571 (12-21) from the field, but Houston made six-of-12 three-pointers.
•    Turnovers were seven for Dayton and four for Houston, but the Cougars had a 10-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
•    UH outrebounded the Flyers 19-10, and outscored UD 9-2 on second-chance points.
•    
Nate Santos had 13 points in the half (5-6 FG, 3-3 3-pt.), and Koby Elvis had six assists.
Second Half – Houston 69, Dayton 55
•    Houston used a 9-2 spurt to lead 45-30 by the first media timeout.
•    The Cougars' largest lead was 20 (54-34) as late as 12:24 left in the game.
•    Dayton was held to .269 (7-26) FG shooting, and .111 (1-9) from beyond the arc in the second half.
BY THE NUMBERS
•    DaRon Homes II led UD with 16 points

Nate Santos was also in double figures with 14 (5-8 FG, 3-4 3-pt.).

Kobe Elvis handed out nine assists without a turnover.
•    Santos was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 17.0 points and 6.3 rebounds a game, while shooting .680 (17-25) from the field, and 646 (7-11) from three-point range.
