Women’s Basketball Prevails Over Ohio Dominican At UD Arena

The Flyers Trailed Early But Managed To Come Away With The Win

Box Score DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team took down Division II opponent Ohio Dominican Sunday afternoon at UD Arena.  
 
The Flyers (6-5) fell behind early but pulled away in the second half to defeat Ohio Dominican (3-7).
 
KEY MOMENT
3Q- 6:27- Redshirt senior Destiny Bohanon converted a fastbreak layup to give the Flyers a 46-47 lead. They would not trail again.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 18, Ohio Dominican 19
  • Ohio Dominican got the scoring started with a three on their first possession of the contest. 
  • Junior Arianna Smith converted a layup on the other end to make the score 3-2 just 34 seconds in. 
  • Another three would make the score 6-2 Panthers with 8:13 left in the quarter. 
  • The Flyers would go on a 2:26 scoring drought before calling a timeout. A 6-0 run by Ohio Dominican in this time saw them take a 7-point lead with 6:49 left to play. 
  • Sophomore Nayo Lear would take a steal to the basket coming out of the timeout to cut the deficit to 9-4. 
  • Lear would contribute again on the next possession, tossing a pass from half-court to senior Taisiya Kozlova for an assist.
  • Freshman Riley Rismiller managed to grab a rebound off a block by the Panthers and lay it in for her first points of the game. 
  • After a Lear layup, Bohanon would grab a steal on the inbounds pass, resulting in another layup by redshirt sophomore Shannon Wheeler to cut the deficit to 14-17 with 1:24 left to play in the quarter. 
  • Graduate student Mariah Perez converted a layup off of an assist by freshman Denika Lightbourne at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 1 at 18-19 after one quarter of play. 
  • The Flyers were led by Lear and Smith with four points each. Smith led the way on the boards, collecting six rebounds. 
2nd Quarter: Dayton 36, Ohio Dominican 38
  • After a slow start for both teams, Lear got the second quarter started by ripping a steal away from the Panthers and taking all the way to the hoop to give the Flyers their first lead of the game with 8:16 remaining. 
  • After a Panther three, Lear found Perez for a layup to tie the game back at 22 with 7:31 to play in the quarter. 
  • With the help of some stellar defense, including a block by Perez, the Flyers took a four-point lead at 26-22 before Ohio Dominican called a timeout with 6:13 on the clock. 
  • With 3:03 remaining, the Flyers had converted six of their last seven field goals and still held a slim lead at 34-32. 
  • Dayton would then go on to miss their next five field goals as Ohio Dominican regained the lead at 36-34 with 1:39 left in the half.
  • A 9-2 run by the Panthers to finish the half saw them go into the break with a lead of 38-36.
  • Lear was a bright spot for the Flyers in the first half with a team-high and personal season-high of 12 points and four assists. Smith leads all players with 11 rebounds. 
3rd Quarter: Dayton 58, Ohio Dominican 51
  • Lear got the scoring started in the second half by converting a layup to tie the game at 38. 
  • A Panther three saw them quickly regain the lead at 41-38 just under a minute into the second half. 
  • Arianna Smith gave the Flyers a 45-43 lead at the seven-minute mark by converting an and-one. 
  • The teams continued to exchange leads as the Panthers would take a one-point lead before a Bohanon layup off the fast break pushed the Flyers back in front at 47-46 with 6:27 left in the quarter. 
  • The media timeout interrupted a cold spell for both teams as Ohio Dominican was just one of their last seven field goals and had not scored in 2:36 while Dayton had not converted a field goal in 2:30. The Flyers were holding on to a 48-46 lead. 
  • Rismiller broke the drought with a made layup to give the Flyers their largest lead of the game of six at 52-46.
  • After three straight made free throws by Ohio Dominican, Koslova hit a corner three to bring the Flyer lead back to six with 1:31 left in the quarter. 
  • The Flyers would take a 58-51 lead into the fourth quarter after senior Anyssa Jones hit a mid-range jumper off of a season-high sixth assist from Lear. 
4th Quarter: Dayton 83, Ohio Dominican 64
  • Smith got Dayton on the board first in the fourth quarter with a jumper off of an assist from Wheeler. The Flyers led 60-51 with 9:16 left to play. 
  • Smith gave the Flyers their first double-digit lead after grabbing her career-high 20th rebound with 7:58 remaining at 62-51. 
  • Lear tied her career high in assists at seven with a half-court dime to Wheeler who converted an open layup with 7:24 remaining. 
  • The Flyers would get hot, making three straight field goals while Ohio Dominican struggled to get anything going early in the quarter as the Flyers took a 70-55 lead into the media timeout. 
  • This run would prove decisive as the Flyers controlled a double-digit lead the rest of the way, making six of their last eight field goal attempts and winning 83-64. 
  • Lear contributed a season-high 16 points as well as a career-high eight assists. Both were team-highs on the afternoon. Arianna Smith achieved a career-high in rebounds with 21 which also led the team.
