Women’s Basketball Falls At Vanderbilt Wednesday

The Flyers Wrapped-Up Non-Conference Play At 6-6

NASHVILLE – The University of Dayton women's basketball team went on the road to face RV Vanderbilt University to finish up non-conference play and suffered a 70-53 defeat.

The Flyers (6-6) return to league play with a .500 mark while the Commodores (11-1) continue their winning streak.

KEY MOMENT
3rd quarter – Vanderbilt ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to pull away from Dayton.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 17, Vanderbilt 17
  • Both teams started off aggressive defensively as neither team was able to score on their first few possessions.
  • Vandy was the first to strike with a transition layup at the 8:10 mark. Dayton didn't get its first bucket until 7:01 on the drive from senior Anyssa Jones.
  • Jones followed that up with a big three to cut the margin to one at 8-7, but the Commodores answered just before the media break to make it a four-point game.
  • Junior Ivy Wolf hit a big three with 3:20 to play to pull the Flyers back within a possession of the Commodores. She converted another with under a minute to play to make it 17-13 in favor of Vandy.
  • Sophomore Nayo Lear got a steal and layup at the buzzer to tie the game up at 17-17.
  • Dayton outscored Vandy off the bench 11-1 in the opening 10 minutes.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 26, Vanderbilt 42
  • The Flyers carried that momentum over into the second and controlled the tempo early.
  • The Commodores answered though and got the margin back to six with 7:26 on the clock.
  • Freshman Riley Rismiller battled inside and got her second bucket of the game, both contested, to open the scoring for the Flyers in the second.
  • The hosts managed to get the margin to double digits with under three to go in the quarter.
  • Vandy ended the quarter on an 8-0 run over 1:54 while Dayton was 1-for-7 during the stretch.
  • Wolf had a team-high nine points, all on threes, while Jones added seven points
3rd Quarter: Dayton 41, Vanderbilt 51
  • Lear hit a jumper on the opening possession for the Flyers to try to spark a Dayton rally.
  • After that, UD went cold, going 0-for-7 over a 2:53 stretch. An and-one by Wolf at the 6:18 mark ended the drought.
  • Midway through the third, the Flyers faced a 15-point margin at 49-34.
  • Jones and Wolf both reached double-digits scoring in the quarter.
  • Dayton started to claw its way back during a four minute drought by the Commodores heading into the final minute of the third with the score at 51-39.
  • Smith got a bucket and the foul to end the third, making it a 10-point game.
4th Quarter: Dayton 53, Vanderbilt 70
  • Lear hit a jumper in transition after a defensive stop to close the gap to single digits for the first time since the first half.
  • Once again, the Commodores responded and pushed their lead back to 15 with 7:16 on the clock.
  • Vanderbilt called a timeout after Wolf hit her fifth three of the game to make it 59-47 with 5:34 to play.
  • The Commodores slowed the pace of the game down and the Flyers just ran out of time to mount the comeback.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
18 – Ivy Wolf had a team-high 18 points going 5-of-11 from three point range.
15 – Anyssa Jones was right there with her adding 15 points and three rebounds.
48% to 31% - Vanderbilt hit 48 percent of its shots while Dayton shot 31 percent overall.
31 to 7 – The Flyers outscored the Commodores 31-7 on bench points.
20 – Dayton forced 20 Vanderbilt turnovers for 18 points off turnovers.

KEY STAT
41 to 30 – Vandy outrebounded UD 41-30 in the contest.

The Flyers head into the holiday break before returning to Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, Dec. 30 at home against Duquesne University at 8 p.m.
