Women's Basketball Suffers Defeat To Duquesne In A-10 Play

The Flyers Were Unable To Overcome A Poor Shooting Night

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team fell in their Atlantic 10 conference contest at home to Duquesne University on Saturday night. 
 
The Flyers (6-7) trailed the whole way, ultimately suffering a 28-point defeat at the hands of Duquesne (7-6)
 
KEY MOMENT
3Q- 6:06- Duquesne went on an 11-0 run to put the game out of striking distance, ensuring a defeat for the Flyers. 
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 7, Duquesne 22
  • It was a slow start for both teams as the first points of the game came off of a Duquesne three a minute and a half into the game. They would go up 5-0 a minute later. 
  • Freshman Riley Rismiller got the Flyers on the board with a layup at the seven-and-a-half-minute mark. 
  • The first half of the quarter proved difficult for the Flyers as they went into the media timeout down 11-2. They had not scored in almost three minutes which opened the door for Duquesne to go on a run that stood at 6-0. 
  • Redshirt senior Destiny Bohanon got herself into the scoring column by converting a midrange shot with 3:09 left in the quarter to make the score 13-4.
  • Bohanon would then cut the deficit to single digits at 14-7 with a three at the two-and-a-half-minute mark. 
  • Duquesne would go on an 8-0 run to close the period and take a commanding lead into the break.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 19, Duquesne 34
  • Graduate student Mariah Perez got her first points of the night and the first of the quarter for the Flyers with a putback finish through contact. 
  • With seven minutes remaining, the Flyers forced the Dukes into a shot clock violation with the score at 24-10.
  • Senior Taisiya Koslova hit a corner three for her first points of the night with six minutes left in the quarter. 
  • Both teams struggled to score points through the first half of the second quarter as they had made only a combined five field goals at the media timeout. 
  • Junior Arianna Smith hit a jumper out of the media timeout to notch her first points of the night.
  • With just under two minutes left in the half, Smith converted a layup through contact. 
  • On the next possession, senior Anyssa Jones knocked down a mid-range jumper to draw the Flyers a little bit closer with the score now being 34-19. 
  • The teams were equal in points scored in the second half with 12.
  • Smith led the Flyers with six rebounds at halftime which is good enough for second amongst all players. 
3rd Quarter: Dayton 27, Duquesne 54
  • Duquesne got the scoring started in the second half before Smith converted a tough layup with 8:04 remaining. 
  • After a Duquesne response, freshman Denika Lightbourne got her first points of the contest via a mid-range floater with seven minutes left in the third quarter. 
  • Halfway through the third quarter, Duquesne had scored six unanswered points which vaulted them to a 44-23 lead at the media timeout. 
  • The Flyers continued to struggle on both sides of the ball as Duquesne was on a 13-0 run with two minutes left to play in the quarter. 
  • Bohanon finally broke the cold streak by knocking down a corner three with 45 seconds on the clock. 
  • Duquesne finished the quarter making seven of their last nine field goal attempts while Dayton had only made one of their last eight. 
  • Through three quarters, Smith led all players with eight rebounds
4th Quarter: Dayton 42, Duquesne 70
  • Through five minutes of play in the fourth quarter, Dayton still had not converted a field goal. Six made free throws have the score at 33-63 in favor of Duquesne. 
  • Freshman Eva Fiala converted the Flyers' first field goal of the quarter with 2:46 remaining. 
  • On the next possession, Rismiller made a layup to bring the score to 39-65.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
9 - Arianna Smith grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. 
15 - The Flyers scored 15 points off the bench in the contest.
44 - Dayton out-rebounded Duquesne 44 to 35 on the night. 
7- The Flyers tallied seven steals during the game.

Dayton only shot 24.1 percent from the field during the game to Duquesne's 45.2 percent.
