Women’s Basketball Drops A-10 Opener At Davidson

The Flyers Were Unable To Rally Against The Wildcats

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team opened up Atlantic 10 play at Davidson College Tuesday night with a tough 81-53 loss.

The Flyers (4-5, 0-1 A-10) begin league play on a negative note while the Wildcats (7-1) showed why they are receiving votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll.

KEY MOMENT
1st quarter – Davidson jumped out to a 24-8 lead in the opening 10 minutes and Dayton was never able to recover from the double-digit deficit.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 8, Davidson 24
  • Davidson jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opening two minutes.
  • Graduate student Mariah Perez unfortunately picked up two quick fouls and Dayton had to go to its bench early.
  • The Wildcats extended their lead to 10-2 and the Flyers had to call their first timeout with 5:217 on the clock.
  • After a couple of baskets by redshirt senior Destiny Bohanon and junior Arianna Smith, Dayton closed the gap to double digits with three minutes to play in the quarter.
  • Davidson shot 62.5 percent in the opening 10 minutes while Dayton shot just 33.3 percent.
  • Smith and Bohanon both had four points each to combine for all of UD's points.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 21, Davidson 45
  • The Flyers got a contested bucket from junior Shannon Wheeler to give the visitors a little momentum to start the quarter.
  • The Wildcats got the margin to 20 at 31-11 with 7:36 to play in the half.
  • Wheeler added another four points to lead UD with six points as the clock ticked under the 5:00 mark.
  • Bohanon had a team-high eight points while Smith and Wheeler had six points each.
  • UD shot 32.3 percent in the first half compared to DC's 62.5 percent.
  • The Wildcats had a 36-20 points in the paint advantage and narrow 18-17 rebounding advantage.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 37, Davidson 66
  • Davidson picked up where it left off in the first half, using a 7-2 run to make it a 29-point margin just 1:40 into the second half.
  • By the media break, the Wildcats held a 58-34 lead over the Flyers despite UD out-rebounding the hosts 23-21.
  • Bohanon and Smith both reached double-digits scoring for Dayton.
  • Davidson pushed its lead back to 30 at 65-35 with just over a minute to play in the third.
4th Quarter: Dayton 53, Davidson 81
  • Dayton held Davidson scoreless for the first 1:48 of the fourth before the Wildcats ended their skid.
  • Smith achieved the double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
  • The Flyers just ran out of time to get much closer down the stretch and dropped their conference opener at Davidson.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
12 and 14 – Arianna Smith recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds, both team highs.
11 – Destiny Bohanon also had a double-digit game with 11 points.
39-31 – The Flyers outrebounded the Wildcats 39-31 in the game.
22 – Dayton outscored Davidson off the bench 22 to 17.
45 – Davidson scored 45 points in the first half, the most in a half for the Wildcats this season.
56.9% - DC also shot a season-best 56.9 percent from the floor while the Flyers were 36.5 percent from the field.

1st – It was the first win for Davidson in the series history, which was 12-0 in favor of Dayton going in.
