Men's Basketball Victorious At Home Against Troy 82-70

Kobe Elvis Led The Flyers With 24 Points

DAYTON – The University of Dayton Flyers extended their winning streak to four as they won at home 82-70 over the Troy University Trojans. The Flyers are now 7-2 on the year and have not lost at home this season (4-0).
 

Kobe Elvis and DaRon Holmes II both led the Flyers to a victory this afternoon with 20+ point games. Elvis scored a college career-high 24 points and Holmes had a season-best 23.  Holmes also added a career-high 17 rebounds to his tally giving him his first double-double of the year
 

GAME RECAP

1st Half – Dayton 45, Troy 31

The Flyers found themselves in an early 6-0 hole as Troy opened the game with two threes on back-to-back possessions. 

A putback dunk by DaRon Holmes II started the scoring for the Flyers followed by a three from Kobe Elvis as the Flyers trailed 6-5 at the 17:17 mark.  

Nate Santos buried a corner three assisted by Holmes II to give the Flyers their first lead of the afternoon 13-12. 

On the following possession, Holmes II found his way to the rim for a strong finish to extend the lead to three and capping an 8-0 run over two minutes of play. 

Elvis continued his strong start with a floater followed by a Koby Brea three which gave Dayton a 20-17 lead with 11:15 to play in the half. 

The Flyers strung together multiple stops and held Troy scoreless for 2:30 of game time. During this, Elvis capitalized with back-to-back threes extending the lead to seven (26-19) at the nine-minute mark.

•  Dayton converted five straight field goals (three from Elvis and two from Holmes) as the Flyers led 32-22 at the under-eight media timeout. 

Petras Padegimas got on the scoresheet with a corner triple coming off of an Enoch Cheeks assist.

The Flyers went on a 14-3 run over the span of 4:20 to bring the score to 40-25 with 3:52 remaining.

Javon Bennett closed the half out with a deep three with nine seconds left followed by him hustling back and blocking a three-point attempt on the other end at the  buzzer, giving the Flyers a 45-31 lead. 

The Flyers shot 58% from three (7-12) in the first half, with key contributors being Elvis who went 3-for-4 from deep.

The Flyers scored the most points scored in the first half since they scored 46 against UMass on Feb. 23, 2022.

 2nd Half –Dayton 82, Troy 70

Elvis continued to have the hot hand as he converted a triple on the first shot attempt of the second half and later added a strong finish at the hoop as the Flyers led 50-33. 

Holmes II acquired a double-double just 26 seconds into the second half when he grabbed his 10th rebound of the game while having 13 points as well.

Elvis hit a pair of free throws to bring his tally to 20 points on the night with 14:04 to play.

Bennett hit his second triple of the day which brought the Flyer lead to 16 (57-41) with 12:59 remaining. 

Once again, Elvis converted a strong finish at the rim to stop the Flyers' four-minute scoring drought as they led 59-44 with 8:57 to play. 

The Flyers' defense continued to dominate Troy as they held them scoreless for three straight minutes of action forcing them to miss five field goal attempts. 

Holmes found Cheeks on a backdoor cut for a two-hand dunk at the 5:46 mark as Dayton led 64-51. This marked Cheek's sixth point of the game and the Flyer's 13th assist. 

A three-pointer made by Troy cut the Flyer's lead to 10 points with 4:57 remaining. 

Following a Dayton timeout, Brea continued his tremendous shooting this season as he hit his second triple of the day, this gave Dayton 10 made threes throughout the game. 

Holmes secured a steal on the defensive end and took it the length of the floor for his fifth dunk of the game as Dayton led 73-59. This dunk marked his 190th on his career which put him tied in the all-time record book with Dayton legend Obi Toppin. 

Dayton ended the game converting on seven of their last nine shot attempts and won 82-70.
