Women’s Basketball Clinches Late Victory At VCU

The Flyers Hit Four Free Throws In The Final Nine Seconds

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 70-65 road win at VCU Wednesday night.

The Flyers (5-19, 4-9 A-10) pick up their fourth Atlantic 10 victory while the Rams' (7-18, 5-9 A-10) losing streak extends to four.

KEY MOMENT
End of 4th – It was a one-point UD lead with 12 seconds left, but the Flyers hit four three throws down the stretch to seal the win.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 19, VCU 15
  • Dayton struck first with a putback from senior Mariah Perez, giving the Flyers an early lead.
  • Junior Anyssa Jones recorded three steals in the first three minutes to go with four points in transition. She added a three to make it a 7-0 UD run to put the Flyers ahead 9-2.
  • At the media break, the Flyers held an 11-2 advantage thanks to a 9-0 run, 4-for-4 stretch, and 3:45 VCU scoring drought.
  • The Rams hit a three at the 2:40 mark to close the game to six, 15-9.
  • VCU hit a buzzer beater, but Dayton still held a 19-15 lead.
  • The Flyers ended the quarter on an 8-for-10 stretch while Jones had a team-high nine points and three steals.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 39, VCU 27
  • The Flyers didn't record their first foul of the game until the 8:45 mark in the second quarter.
  • UD slowed down during a four-plus minute scoring drought of their own before a layup by sophomore Arianna Smith broke the skid and put the Flyers up six.
  • VCU was held without a field goal for over four minutes as well leading into the midway point of the quarter.
  • Jones became the first Flyer in double digits with 11 points, her fourth straight game doing so.
  • Senior Sydney Freeman hit a deep three with 3:36 on the clock to give Dayton its first double-digit lead of the game.
  • Jones, Freeman, and Perez all had double digits while the Flyers shot 50 percent overall, 60 percent from three, and 86 percent from the free throw line in the first half.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 50, VCU 43
  • Perez recorded her 10th rebound of the game to give her her 10th double-double of the year.
  • Dayton called the first timeout of the game at the 7:23 mark to regather after VCU closed the gap to nine points, 42-33.
  • By the media break, the Flyers held a 12-point lead, 47-35.
  • VCU drilled a couple of big shots down the stretch and made it a seven-point game in the final minute of the third.
4th Quarter: Dayton 70, VCU 65
  • The Rams continued to claw back, using a 5-1 run to make it a three-point game in the opening minute of the fourth.
  • Dayton was finally able to get on the board in the quarter with a layup from junior Taisiya Kozlova at the 7:05 mark.
  • VCU tied it up before a three by Freeman put them back on top. The Rams answered right back with a three of their own and 5:47 to play.
  • The teams traded buckets and free throws over the next few minutes with neither team willing to budge.
  • Kozlova nailed a big three with 1:31 on the clock to put Dayton up 66-60, capping a 3-for-3 run.
  • The Rams cut it to one with 10 seconds to play before a pair of free throws by Freeman put the Flyers back on top 68-65.
  • VCU was unable to convert and Smith hit her free throws to clinch the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
18 – Anyssa Jones scored a team-high 18 points to reach double figures for the fourth straight game and 10th time this season. She also had a career-high five steals.
10thMariah Perez recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
14 and 10 – Arianna Smith also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
17 and 9 – Sydney Freeman was second on the team with 17 points and was one assist shy of a double-double with nine.
53% - Dayton shot 53 percent from three point range.

KEY STAT
14 of 17 – The Flyers made their free throws when they mattered most and finished 14-of-17 at the charity stripe.
