Women's Basketball Hosts La Salle In Regular Season Home Finale

The Flyers And Explorers Tip-Off At 7 p.m.

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will host La Salle University Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in the final home game of the 2022-23 season.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton wraps-up play at UD Arena with a 5-19 record overall and 4-9 Atlantic 10 mark. The Flyers are coming off a road win at VCU and is 2-10 at home this year.

Head coach Tamika Williams-Jeter is in her first season in charge of her hometown Flyers, coming over after a year at Wittenberg. She has assistant coaching stops at Kansas, Kentucky, Penn State, and Ohio State.

As a team this year, the Flyers are averaging 65.7 points per game and giving up 70.8 points to opponents. Dayton is shooting 40.8 percent overall, 34.6 percent from three point range, and 72.3 percent from the free throw line. UD is the top rebounding team in the conference with a +4.8 margin.

Dayton is led by seniors Mariah Perez with 11.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, and Sydney Freeman with 10.6 points and 4.4 assists each outing. Sophomore Arianna Smith is contributing 10.0 points and 8.5 boards per effort as well.

SCOUTING LA SALLE
La Salle comes to Dayton with a 16-12 record on the season and 7-6 A-10 mark. The Explorers have won two of their last three, but both victories were at home. LU is 6-9 in road games this year.

Head coach Mountain MacGillivray is in his fifth year at the helm of the Explorers.

As a team, La Salle is scoring 64.7 points each outing and holding opposing teams to 63.4 points per contest. The Explorers are shooting 37.8 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from behind the arc, and 73.8 percent from the charity stripe. LU has a positive turnover margin, but is being out-rebounded on average.

The Explorers are led by Kayla Spruill with 12.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while Claire Jacobs has added 12.2 points in 28 appearances.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton earned a tough 70-65 road win at VCU last Wednesday, making some clutch free throws down the stretch. Mariah Perez and Arianna Smith both had double-doubles while Sydney Freeman added 17 points and nine assists.

La Salle was also on the road, suffering a 63-74 loss at Saint Louis Sunday. Three Explorers were in double figures, led by Kayla Spruill with 15 points and nine rebounds.

SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and La Salle have met 42 times previously with the Flyers holding a 26-16 series advantage. UD has won the last seven meetings including last year's contest in Philadelphia, 65-57.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
As a team, Dayton ranks 26th in the nation in rebounds per game, 39th in defensive rebounding, and 46th in three point percentage. Individually, Mariah Perez is 15th in the country in offensive rebounds per game, 38th in total rebounding, and 43rd in double doubles.

WE'VE GOT AN AUDIENCE
On Feb. 8, 2023, the Flyers played in front of 11,635 fans at UD Arena while hosting Saint Louis. The record-breaking crowd was due to the overwhelming success of UD's annual School Day game, a chance for local school-aged children to take a field trip with the Flyers.

70'S THE MAGIC NUMBER
Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 192-25 (.891) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-0 in 2021-22. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2019-20 when reaching that mark.
