ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Dayton men's tennis team bowed out in the Atlantic 10 Championship final Saturday evening, falling to No. 1 seed VCU 4-0 at the USTA National Campus.
Â
It was the second consecutive year the Flyers met the Rams in the A-10 Championship final and the sixth straight conference tournament title for VCU.
Dayton finishes the season 15-11, marking the fourth time in the last five full seasons the Flyers have finished with 15+ wins in a season.
Weather played a role in yet another match during the Championship, forcing the final indoors. VCU jumped ahead by winning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, and rode the momentum into singles.
Â
The Rams continued to roll with quick wins at No. 5 and No. 2 singles. The clincher came at No. 3 to send VCU back to the NCAA Tournament.
Â
UD, who came into the Championship as the No. 6 seed, earned their spot in the championship after winning two matches on Friday, April 28. The Flyers outlasted No. 3 seed Saint Louis in a rain-soaked quarterfinal match that finished after midnight and came back to win in dramatic fashion over No. 2 seed Richmond behind freshman
Sai Dore's heroics, 4-3.
