#FlyBoys Split with Massachusetts to Finish Regular Season

Mason Dobie Hit Three Home Runs In Game Two

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Dayton baseball team split the final day of the 2023 regular season, topping Massachusetts 8-5 in game one and falling 13-6 in game two at Earl Lorden Field.

The FlyBoys now travel to Richmond, Va. to play in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, hosted by VCU at The Diamond. UD's seeding has yet to be determined, as the rest of the league finishes action Saturday, May 20. Play begins Tuesday, May 23.

The ball was flying out of the yard at East Lorden Field, as the FlyBoys hit seven home runs in the two games and the Minutemen slugged five themselves.

Sophomore Mason Dobie became the first Dayton baseball player to hit three home runs in the same since at least 2014. Senior Marcos Pujols hit one homer in each game, giving him a long ball in each game of the series and pushing him to a new career-high 14 on the season.

The Flyers' pitching staff set a new program record for strikeouts in a season thanks to their 38 total punchouts this weekend. They've now registered 517 team strikeouts, passing the record of 491 set by the 2019 team.

GAME ONE

UMass scored an early run, but Dayton responded by scoring five unanswered to secure the series victory, going on to win 8-5 in the day's first game.

Seniors Keagan Calero and Nolan Watson each registered three-hit days and both slugged home runs. Calero finished the day with two RBI and a run scored, while Watson tallied one RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore Matt Maloney turned in a 2-for-5 game, while fellow sophomore David Pedanou hit a double.

Senior Anthony Hattrup finished off the game to pick up his second save of the season.

GAME TWO
Massachusetts 13 Dayton 6

The Minutemen jumped ahead with a three-spot in the first inning and plated runs in all but one inning after, avoiding the sweep and ending their season with a 13-6 victory over Dayton.

Though outscored and outhit, the FlyBoys still packed plenty of punch, smacking four home runs in the contest. Mason Dobie had UD's first three-homer game of the Jayson King era and marks the first in at least a decade.

Senior Marcos Pujols hit his second home run of the day, third of the series, 14th of the season, and 40th all-time. After moving into second place on UD's all-time home run list yesterday, he now sits just one behind all-time leader Brooks Vogel.
