RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team's run in the Atlantic 10 Tournament came to a close Friday afternoon, dropping another heartbreaker to George Mason, 3-2, in the A-10 semi-final at The Diamond.
Â
After needing extra innings in the tournament opener on Tuesday, the #FlyBoys and Patriots locked in another pitcher's duel. UD handed the ball to junior
Nick Wissman and he delivered an outstanding performance, tossing six innings, striking out four and allowing just one run while scattering five hits.
Â
George Mason scored a run in the third and then plated two more in the seventh to take a commanding 3-0 lead, but Dayton immediately closed the gap in its next at-bat. After back-to-back doubles from senior
Keagan Calero and sophomore
Mason Dobie brought home one run, Dobie scored on a wild pitch four batters later.
Â
The Flyers threatened once again in the ninth, as
Paxton Tomaini led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and was sacrificed to second by
Michael Adair. Tomaini moved within 90 feet on a lineout by
Omar Daniels, but was stranded there to end the game.
Â
Calero, Dobie and
Carlos Castillo led the Flyers' offense, each collecting multiple hits in the contest. Dobie finished 3-for-5 while both Calero and Castillo registered 2-fo-3 days.
