COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team finished up the 2023 Wolstein Classic Sunday with a 2-2 draw against Cal State Northridge.
The Flyers (0-1-1) earned the late tie while the Matadors (0-0-2) picked up their second draw of the weekend.
KEY MOMENT
- 85th – Dayton got the tying goal with less than five minutes remaining in regulation as senior Geni Kanyane converted a penalty kick.
SCORING BREAKDOWN
- 43:35 – Dayton takes the initial lead right before halftime with a goal from sophomore Johannes Eftevaag off the assist from freshman Cooper Lijewski.
- 62:34 – CSUN evens the score with a goal in the 63rd minute from Jamar Ricketts.
- 67:41 – The Matadors take the lead with a goal in the 68th minute from Bryan Bustamante.
- 84:21 – Kanyane converts the penalty to tie the game up in the 85th minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UD out-shot CSUN 15-11 and put six attempts on target compared to the Matadors' seven on frame.
- Sophomore Sidike Jabateh had a team-high four shots in his first collegiate start.
- Freshman Miles Bonham had three shots as well.
- Senior goalkeeper Dario Caetano had five saves in the effort.
- Both Dayton and CSUN had four yellow cards each.
- Graduate student Hjalti Sigurdsson and sophomore Casper Svendby earned All-Tournament team honors on the weekend.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"The team performed much better today in terms of intensity," said head coach
Dennis Currier. "We controlled most of the phases of the game, but some critical errors led to their goals. We did a very good job though keeping our composure and finding the equalizer late."
