CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Dayton volleyball team posted two straight-set sweeps on the first day of play at the UNI Tournament on Friday. No. 25 Dayton downed Northern Illinois, 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-17), in the day's first matchup followed by a 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-29) win over host Northern Iowa in the nightcap. The Flyers extend their winning streak to five matches.
Dayton is now 10-2 on the season while UNI moved to 1-9 after its match against UD and NIU ended the day with a 5-6 overall mark.
MATCH ONE
Dayton 3, NIU 0
13 & 14 - junior
Lexie Almodovar led three Flyers in double-digit kills with 13 to go with a match-high 14 digs for the only double-double of the match
11 - junior
Alayna Yates tallied 11 kills, the middle blocker's fourth double-digit kill match of the season, to go with four blocks
.529 - sophomore
Taylor Russell tallied 10 kills to one error in 17 attempts for a career-high .529 hitting percentage; Yates also posted a .529 hitting percentage
.316 - as a team, Dayton posted a .316 hitting percentage compared to Northern Illinois' .056
Northern Illinois - Crew Hoffmeier got under a team-best 11 digs to go with four assists
MATCH TWO
Dayton 3, UNI 0
34 & 9 - junior
Alyssa Miller was one off the double-double with 34 assists and nine digs to go with five kills
20 - sophomore
Karissa Kaminski got under a match-high-tying 20 digs, her third 20+ dig match of the season
15 - Almodovar again led all attackers with 15 kills while also getting under nine digs to narrowly miss the DD
Northern Iowa - the host Panthers were led by Kira Fallert with 12 kills while Erin Powers got under 20 digs
UP NEXT
Dayton will close out the weekend Saturday with a single game against North Dakota. First serve between the 25th-ranked Flyers and the Fighting Hawks is set for 1 p.m. ET at Northern Iowa's McLeod Center.
