Men's Soccer Takes On Western Michigan On The Road

The Flyers and Broncos Kick-off At 1 p.m. Sunday

DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team will head back north to take on Western Michigan Sunday at 1 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton looks to end its two-game losing skid this weekend as the Flyers sit at 1-3-1 on the year. UD is 0-1 in true road games this season and have not scored in the past two outings.

Head coach Dennis Currier is in his 19th season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the 2020 season.

As a team, the Flyers are averaging 1.20 goals per game and allowing 1.60 goals to opponents. Dayton is out-shooting opposing teams 15.2 to 10.4, but at a lower percentage.

UD has seven different players with at least a goal this season and four more with one assist. The balanced Flyers' attack is led by graduate student Manny Day and sophomore Joseph Melto Quiah who have four shots on goal each this year. Senior goalkeeper Dario Caetano has 16 saves in five games.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
WESTERN MICHIGAN

Western Michigan hosts Dayton with a 2-1-1 record on the year and 0-0-1 mark at the WMU Soccer Complex. The Broncos hold wins over Utah Valley and Air Force with the loss coming at No. 12 Vermont.

Head coach Chad Wiseman is in his 11th season with WMU and was twice named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2017.

As a team, Western Michigan is scoring just one goal a game, but giving up 0.75 goals to opponents. The Broncos are being out-shot each contest, but at a higher percentage.

Leading the way for WMU is Carson Hodgson and Charlie Sharp, who both have two goals and an assist on the year. Goalkeeper Ethan Brandt has 17 saves and only three goals allowed in four games between the posts.

LAST OUTING
Dayton faced the Big Ten's Michigan State Thursday night on the road. The Flyers battled through poor weather conditions and controlled the game until the Spartans earned a penalty and converted in the 84th minute.

Western Michigan drew with Butler at home on Labor Day, 0-0. The Broncos had 16 shots in the game and put eight on target, but were unable to get the game-winner.

SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and Western Michigan have played 15 times in program history with the Flyers holding four wins to the Broncos eight victories. The two teams last met back in 2021 with UD falling on the road, 3-0.

DAYTON DUO EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS
The Flyers had a pair of student athletes recognized on the Ohio State Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team. Grad student Hjalti Sigurdsson and sophomore Casper Svendby both picked up accolades for their efforts in games against UC Davis and CSUN.

UMAR NAMED MIDFIELDER TO WATCH
The United Soccer Coaches announced their preseason Top Players to Watch and recognized Dayton sophomore Basit Umar as one of the Top 25 male student-athletes to look out for, one of two A-10 honorees (Marc Torellas, Loyola).

FLYERS PICKED 2ND IN PRESEASON POLL
Dayton was picked to finish second this upcoming season in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll. The Flyers received 161 points behind reigning A-10 Champs Saint Louis, who earned 13 of the 14 first-place votes, Loyola Chicago earning one.

DAYTON PAIR RECEIVES A-10 PRESEASON HONORS
Dayton had a pair of student-athletes named to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team. Sophomore midfielder Basit Umar and senior goalkeeper Dario Caetano both were recognized after earning All-Rookie Team honors last season. (It was Caetano's first year of American collegiate soccer so he was eligible as a rookie.)

INTERNATIONAL FLAIR
Dayton historically has had a diverse team with players hailing from all over the globe. This season is no different with the Flyers having 17 international student-athletes.

WELCOME TO DAYTON
The Flyers are bringing in the most newcomers they have had in recent history with 20 new players joining the program including 16 freshmen.

SIGURDSSON NAMED DAYTON MALE STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
The University of Dayton Athletics Division chose its student-athletes of the week for Aug. 30 and recognized graduate student Hjalti Sigurdsson as the College Sports Advantage Male Student Athlete of the Week for Dayton.

UP NEXT
The Flyers will open up Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, Sept. 16 at home against Rhode Island. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Baujan Field.
