DAYTON – The University of Dayton men's basketball team won its 12th straight game and improved to 5-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference Saturday with a 96-62 victory over the Rhode Island Rams coached by former Flyer coach Archie Miller.
Javon Bennett led the way with 22 points. DaRon Holmes II put up 21 points and six rebounds while Koby Brea was the third Flyer in double-digits with 15 points as he shot 71% from beyond the arc (5-7).
UD is 15-2 overall, and ranked 21st in the latest AP and 23rd in the latest Coaches Poll. URI is 9-9 on the year, and 3-2 in the A-10.
GAME RECAP
First Half – Dayton 47, Rhode Island 27
• DaRon Holmes II got the scoring started by hitting a fadeaway jumper on the Flyers' first possession.
• Holmes would get a friendly bounce on a three with 18:17 left to play to increase the lead to 6-0 Dayton.
• Back-to-back buckets starting with a Kobe Elvis three followed by a Holmes increased the Flyer lead to 11-0 at the 17:04 mark
• Koby Brea entered the game and made an immediate impact, knocking down his first shot attempt of the game for three.
• Javon Bennett got himself on the board with a nice driving layup to keep the Flyers in the lead 16-7
• A Holmes block on the defensive end led to a three from Bennett increasing the Flyer lead to 19-7 with 13 minutes to play in the first half.
• Holmes continued his strong 1st half performance with a dunk off of a no-look assist from Brea to extend Dayton's lead 21-7 leading to a Rams timeout at the 12:41 mark.
• Out of the timeout, Brea extended the Flyers' lead even further by knocking down his second three-pointer of the half which put Dayton up 24-8 at the 11:08 mark
• A four-point-play and another three cut the Dayton lead to 24-15, but UD answered in a big way, scoring 15 unanswered points over the next 4:22.
• Isaac Jack made his first big impact of the game by grabbing a rebound off of a missed three and finishing a putback dunk to stifle a Rams run.
• A steal from Enoch Cheeks on the defensive end led to Holmes converting through a foul for and-one
• Cheeks took a Brea pass to the rim and converted a tough layup through contact to increase the Flyer lead to 16 at 31-15.
• Bennett continued the Flyers' 10-0 run with a three of his own off a nice assist from Holmes extending the Flyers lead to 34-15 at the 6:44 mark
• Cheeks would catch the hot hand by knocking down a three on the very next possession.
•It was Holmes scoring again in the post off of an assist from Cheeks to close the Flyer run to 15-0 and force Rhode Island to call timeout.
• Bennett converted the Flyers' sixth field goal in their last seven attempts with a three to extend the lead to 42-20.
• Nate Santos continued the Flyers' hot shooting with a layup keeping the Flyers lead 44-23 at 4:07 off of the assist from Bennett.
• Brea hit his third three of the half with a step-back over a defender to extend the lead to 47-27 going into the break.
Second Half – Dayton 96, Rhode Island 62
• Santos got the Flyers going by knocking down a three on their second possession off the assist from Bennett
• Bennett finished off a fast break with a layup off of a beautiful assist from Elvis.
• Santos continued his hot start to the half with his second three-pointer of the half off the assist from Holmes with 17:53 to play.
• The Flyers started off the half with three consecutive made field goals, forcing Rhode Island to use an early timeout with just over two minutes gone in the period.
• Holmes II got himself his first bucket of the second half with a nice fadeaway jumper in the paint extending Dayton's lead 58-30 off the assist from Santos at the 17:04 mark
• Elvis converted a layup off of a drive to the basket for Dayton's fifth-straight made field goal.
• Holmes converted two free throws at the 14:53 mark to extend the lead to 30 at 64-34 and give himself 20 points for the third consecutive game.
• Brea continued his hot shooting by hitting his fourth shot from beyond the arc (in as many attempts) at the 14:12 mark off the assist from Elvis.
• Elvis found a wide-open Jack in the post who then converted the opportunity with a dunk to extend the lead to 31 at 69-38.
• Brea knocked down his fifth three of the contest to extend the Flyers' lead to 73-41 with 10:54 left to play.
• Jack continued his big impact off the bench by finishing with a layup off the assist from Bennett to extend the Flyers' lead to 75-41 at the 10:26 mark
• Jack tied his season high in points with a putback dunk at the 5:22 mark to make the score 82-55.
• Bennett got the soft touch as the shot clock expired to extend the Flyer's lead 84-55 at the 4:39 mark
•Brady Uhl got himself on the board with a corner three to increase the Flyer lead to 30 at 87-57.
• On the next possession Bennett would set a new season high by knocking down a three to give him 22 in the contest.
• Uhl knocked down his second three of the game with a stepback over a defender which tied his career high.
BY THE NUMBERS
• 47 and 49- The Flyers scored 47 points in the first half and 49 in the second. Both set new season highs for points in a half.
• 16 to 8- The Flyers were able to knock down twice as many threes as the Rams thanks to five from Brea and four from Bennett
• 3- DaRon Holmes II scored more than 20 points for the third consecutive game.
• 5- Holmes did his damage in a season-low 24 minutes of action. He scored 21 points, had a team-high six rebounds, three assists, three blocked shots and one steal. He did not play in the game's final 14 minutes and 53 seconds.
• 5- Koby Brea tied his season high in three-pointers knocking down five in the contest.
• 6- Kobe Elvis led Dayton with six assists.
• 96- The Flyers' 96 points is the most they have scored all season.
• 8- Isaac Jack matched his season high in points
• 22- Javon Bennett set a new season high in points with 22. He made eight-of-nine field goals, including four-of-five from deep. He also had five assists.
• 24-2- Dayton had 24 assists (on 33 made buckets) against just two turnovers.
• 3:41- Second-year walkon Atticus Schuler had the extended run of his career with just under four minutes of playing time.
• 2:33- First-year walkons Makai Grant, Will Maxwell and C.J. Napier all played the most they have in a Dayton uniform.
