DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's basketball team fell short against the VCU Rams in front of a record-breaking crowd at UD Arena. The attendance is the largest non-Power 6 crowd this season, as well as the 34th largest single game attendance this year.
The Flyers (8-11, 2-6 A-10) drop their sixth Atlantic 10 contest while the Rams (17-2, 6-1 A-10) have now won five straight.
KEY MOMENT
1st Quarter – The Rams started the game on a 10-0, which proved to be the difference in the game.
1st Quarter: Dayton 13, VCU 19
- The Flyers started the game cold going 0-4 from the field.
- Junior Ivy Wolf put the Flyers in the scoring column shooting a mid-range jumper.
- Dayton cut the deficit down 11-8 when they went on a 6-0 run powered by freshman Eve Fiala and junior Arianna Smith
- Two VCU free throws extended the Rams lead to six at 1:44
- Despite Dayton outshooting VCU from the field, VCU's two three point baskets were the difference
2nd Quarter: Dayton 26, VCU 38
- VCU started the quarter on a 5-0 scoring run.
- Junior Shannon Wheeler euro-stepped to the basket to make the score 24-15 Rams.
- Wolf scored five straight points forcing VCU to call a timeout at 6:21.
- Fiala scored a tough basket under the rim to bring the Flyers the closest they've been to the Rams all game, 24-22.
- Senior Anyssa Jones made the game 28-24 with 3:28.
- The final three minutes of the quarter ended in 10-2 run from VCU.
- At half, free throws separated the teams as VCU was 11-14 from the line, while UD was 1-2.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 44, VCU 59
- The first possession of the second half led to VCU two free throws.
- Jones started the Flyers second half scoring, draining a three pointer at 8:56.
- Jones followed her three up with a reverse layup making the score 44-31.
- Senior Destiny Bohanon scored her first basket on a baseline drive right before the media timeout.
- Head Coach Tamika Williams-Jeter received a technical foul and ejection at the 4:04 mark.
- Wheeler's steal out of the technical foul led to her converting one of her two free throws..
- A Wolf floater with just over a minute made the score 55-44.
4th Quarter: Dayton 62, VCU 73
- Senior Mariah Perez' second-chance basket started UD's fourth quarter scoring and cut the deficit to 59-46.
- Bohanon cut the Rams' lead to single digits with a three pointer at 6:29.
- Jones converted her and-one opportunity at 4:03, making the score 62-55 Rams.
- At 3:19, the Flyers were only down five, 62-55, courtesy of two Jones free throws.
- Back-to-back three pointers and a layup extended VCU's lead to 13 with just under two minutes left.
- With 45 seconds remaining, Smith's layup made the score 70-60 Rams.
- Smith scored the final points of the game under the basket.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
51 to 45 – The Flyers shot 51% from the field, which bested VCU's 45%.
42 to 24 – Dayton outscored VCU in the paint 42-24.
38% – Although both VCU and Dayton shot 38% from three, VCU had twice the volume going 6-16 compared to the Flyer's 3-8 effort.
30 to 11 – VCU got to the free throw line 30 times, converting on 23 compared to UD's 7-11 from the line.

Anyssa Jones led the Flyers with 15 points and six rebounds.
KEY STAT
12, 097 - The largest attendance in Dayton program history, breaking the 11,635 attendance record set last year. The attendance is the largest for any non-Power 6 conference this season. It is also the 34th largest crowd nationally for a single game.
