DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team returned home to host Fordham University Saturday night for Senior Night, but unfortunately dropped a 4-2 decision.
The Flyers (5-2-3, 1-1-2 A-10) ended their seven-game unbeaten streak while the Rams (5-3-4, 2-1-2 A-10) moved ahead of UD in the A-10 standings.
SCORING BREAKDOWN
- 4:50 – Fordham took the lead scoring the first goal off of a corner kick.
- 37:56 – The Rams then doubled their lead before the half off another set piece.
- 46:40 – Graduate student Hjalti Sigurdsson crossed from right side to left where senior Joseph Melto Quiah collected and fired it to the far upper-90 from 20 yards out.
- 63:22 – Graduate student Geni Kanyane trapped the rebounded ball and rocked a low shot to the far lower corner to tie the game up at 2-2.
- 79:03 – Fordham then took the lead back on a scrum in front of the goal in the 80th minute.
- 82:29 – Just a few minutes later, the Rams sealed the victory as their striker took on two defenders and beat the keeper on a breakaway.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Flyers dominated the shot account with 33 in the contest, seven on target, compared to nine for the Rams, who put six on goal.
- Fouls were 14-5 in favor of the visitors.
- In typical, physical A-10 game fashion, there were six yellow cards in the game.
- Freshman Felix Buabeng and senior Ethan Sassine both had five shots each to lead UD.
- Melto Quiah scored his fourth goal of the year while Kanyane recorded his second.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"First off this night honors a great group of seniors and obviously we wanted to get the win for them, but fell short," said head coach
Dennis Currier. "We played a really good second half, getting back into the game, but what let us down was set pieces. That's where we have to get better, defending those. You know we put up 33 shots so we are capable of scoring goals, were just a little bit too inaccurate. The A-10 is tough this year and we have to keep working to qualify for the tournament."
UP NEXT
- The Flyers host No. 4 West Virginia next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field in the final non-conference game of the season.
