Women’s Basketball Loses At George Mason In Final Road Game

The Flyers Fell To The 23-5 Patriots Wednesday Night

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team played its final away game of the regular season Wednesday and suffered a 78-53 loss to George Mason University.

The Flyers (11-17, 5-12 A-10) were unable to earn the upset while the Patriots (23-5, 14-3 A-10) push their winning streak to four.
 
KEY MOMENT
End of 2nd – George Mason finished the first half on a 12-0 run and took control of the contest the rest of the way.  

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 6, George Mason 10
  • Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as neither team was able to score in the opening 2:30.
  • George Mason was the first to get on the scoreboard at the 6:23 mark with a transition layup.
  • Dayton got its first basket with 5:47 on the clock on a jumper by freshman Denika Lightbourne to tie it up at 2-2. That score held through the media timeout.
  • The Patriots followed up with a couple of free throws to take a 5-2 lead while the Flyers were on a 2:30 scoring drought.
  • Mason scored six straight points from the charity stripe going four-plus minutes without a field goal, but still had an 8-4 advantage.
  • Both teams shot 14 percent or under in the first 10 minutes.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 19, George Mason 36
  • Junior Ivy Wolf drilled a three to start the second, but the Patriots answered with a three of their own in the opening minute. Wolf then traded threes again with GMU to make it a 16-12 contest.
  • The Patriots extended their lead to seven at 21-14, but Wolf hit her third three of the game and reached double figures already with 11 points.
  • At the media break, Dayton faced a 24-17 deficit.
  • The margin stayed around seven for the next few minutes as the two teams traded baskets back-and-forth.
  • Mason managed to push its lead to double-digits by the 1:41 mark with a 30-19 margin.
  • The Patriots ended the quarter on a 12-0 run over 3:49 and took a commanding lead into the locker room.
  • UD shot 23 percent in the first half while GMU shot 39 percent and benefited from a 16-9 turnover advantage.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 36, George Mason 61
  • The Flyers started the second half the same way they ended the first with a tough basket junior Shannon Wheeler.
  • Dayton held George Mason without a bucket of its own until the 7:46 mark.
  • The Patriots still managed to extend their lead to 20+ at 42-21 with 6:47 on the clock.
  • Seniors Taisiya Kozlova and Destiny Bohanon hit a pair of threes out of the media break, but Mason answered with threes each time.
  • The Patriots kept their distance from the Flyers while going 9-for-9 during a stretch.
4th Quarter: Dayton 51, George Mason 78
  • George Mason continued to control the tempo early on in the fourth and got the margin to 65-37 in the first two minutes.
  • Wolf drilled her fourth three of the game at the 5:55 mark to give her 18 points on the game.
  • Sophomore Nayo Lear followed up with an and-one to get six quick points for Dayton.
  • Freshman Eve Fiala put a strong fourth quarter together with eight points in the final 10 minutes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
18 – Ivy Wolf scored a team-high 18 points and hit four threes in the effort.
8 and 7 – Arianna Smith chipped in eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
17 – The Flyers had 17 offensive rebounds leading to 10 second chance points.
37 – Rebounds were tied 37 for each team.

KEY STAT
21 on 20 – George Mason had 21 points off 20 Dayton turnovers.
