PHILADELPHIA – The University of Dayton women's basketball team went on the road and rallied to pick up a hard-fought 72-69 win in overtime over La Salle University.
KEY MOMENT
OT – Final Minute –
Destiny Bohanon hit four free throws late and the defense stepped up down the stretch to earn the victory.
1st Quarter: Dayton 14, La Salle 12
- Dayton struck first with a three at the end of the shot clock by redshirt senior Destiny Bohanon.
- By the media break, the Flyers and Explorers were even at 7-7.
- La Salle managed to get its first lead of the game out of the media timeout, but Dayton quickly answered with a putback by freshman Eve Fiala.
- Junior Ivy Wolf converted an and-one at the 1:17 mark to tie the game up once again at 12-12. She followed that up on the next possession with a pull-up jumper to put UD up two.
- The Flyers shot 35 percent in the opening 10 minutes compared to the Explorers' 26 percent.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 22, La Salle 29
- UD took its biggest lead of the game by the 7:52 mark after a pair of free throws by freshman Denika Lightbourne.
- Halfway through the second, the Flyers had a 20-18 lead over the Explorers.
- Once again, La Salle responded out of the break and took a 22-20 lead of their own.
- The hosts used a 5-0 run to take a 29-22 advantage with under a minute to play in the half, forcing a Dayton timeout.
- The Flyers had a 19-16 rebound advantage in the first half, but had 11 turnovers to the Explorers' five.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 41, La Salle 46
- Dayton started off the third with a 6-0 run including a pair of buckets from junior Shannon Wheeler, making it a 29-28 contest and forcing La Salle's first timeout of the game.
- The Explorers didn't get their first points of the half until the 7:42 mark.
- By the media break, La Salle was up 37-30 on Dayton.
- Wheeler was the first Flyer to reach double figures with 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting.
- La Salle extended its lead to double digits at 42-32 with 3:46 on the clock.
- The Flyers used a 9-2 run to close the gap to five at 46-41 with 1:10 to play in the third.
4th Quarter: Dayton 58, La Salle 58
- Fiala got an and-one to start the fourth and made it a two-point game, giving her 10 points for the contest.
- Bohanon's pull-up jumper at the free throw line tied the game up at 46-46 with 8:16 to play. It was the first time the game was tied since the 4:20 mark in the second.
- Junior Ivy Wolf hit another jumper to give Dayton the 48-46 lead with 6:32 on the clock.
- The two teams traded buckets over the next four minutes with neither team willing to budge.
- Sophomore Nayo Lear drove and got a layup to give Dayton the 58-56 lead with just six seconds remaining in regulation.
- The Explorers answered and tied it up with three seconds on the clock.
- In the end, Dayton was unable to get the game-winner to fall, forcing overtime.
Overtime: Dayton 72, La Salle 69
- La Salle took the initial lead with a layup at the 3:44 mark in overtime.
- Senior Anyssa Jones hit a pair of free throws to tie it up once again.
- She followed that up with an acrobatic layup to put UD up 62-61. After a La Salle three, Jones then got a putback to give the Flyers a 66-64 lead and a minute to play.
- The Explorers hit another big three to make it 68-67 in favor of the Flyers with :28 on the clock.
- Bohanon hit two free throws to push the margin to three, 70-67 with :26 to play.
- La Salle answered once again to make it 70-69.
- Bohanon stepped up and drilled two more free throws to extend it to three with 15 seconds remaining.
- In the end, the Flyers' defense stepped up and held on for the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
12 –
Eve Fiala had her second-straight double-digit scoring game with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
13 –
Anyssa Jones recorded a career-high 13 rebounds to go with eight points in the effort.
14 –
Shannon Wheeler tied a career-high with 14 points.
15 –
Destiny Bohanon had a game-high 16 points and hit crucial free throws down the stretch.
11 and 8 –
Mariah Perez added 11 rebounds and eight points in the win.
52-38 – Dayton outrebounded La Salle 52-38, a new season-high for the Flyers.
17 – UD had 17 assists in the game.
KEY STAT
81.3% to 44.4% - La Salle was 8-of-18 from the free throw line for 44.4 percent while Dayton was 13-of-16 for 81.3 percent.
