MACON, Ga. - The University of Dayton softball team split its first two games of the season at Mercer's Heart of Georgia Classic on opening day. Dayton shut out Drexel, 8-0, in game one followed by a 5-3 loss to host Mercer in the nightcap.

Dayton ends the day with a 1-1 record. Nicolette Papavasiliou and Emma Schutter each tallied three hits on the day.

GAME ONE
Dayton 8, Drexel 0
HR - two Flyers knocked out home runs in back-to-back fashion during the fourth inning. Maddie Kapsimalis and Katie Reeg tallied the team's first two longballs of the season
8 - sophomore Izzy Kemp recorded eight strikes outs on her way to a complete-game shutout in the circle
4 - Kapsimalis led all players with four RBI, equaling her career high
2 - three Flyers tallied two hits in the game including freshman Bailey Kirnan who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base
Winning Pitcher: Kemp (1-0); Nelson (0-1)

GAME TWO
Mercer 5, Dayton 3
H - five different Flyers recorded a hit in the contest
6 - Reeg led the team with six putouts playing at first base
3 - as a team, Dayton tallied three double plays on defense
Winning Pitcher: G. Taylor (1-0); Losing Pitcher: Sarah Bailitz (0-1)

UP NEXT
On day two of the Heart of Georgia Classic, Dayton will once again play games against Drexel and host Mercer. First pitch between the Flyers and the Dragons is set for 12 p.m. Saturday followed by a 5 p.m. start against the Bears. Both games will be available to follow via live stats.
