Three Flyers Earn Seven Atlantic 10 MBB Honors

DaRon Holmes II Named Co-Player Of The Year, Defensive Player Of The Year, First Team All-Conference & All-Defensive; Koby Brea Named Sixth Man Of The Year; Nate Santos Named Third Team All-Conference & All-Academic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Three University of Dayton men's basketball players were honored when the Atlantic 10 announced its end-of-the-year awards today.

Forward DaRon Holmes II was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Year, A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-Atlantic 10 and to the All-Defensive Team.  Junior guard Koby Brea was named the A-10 Sixth Man of the Year for the second time in three years, and junior forward Nate Santos was selected Third Team All-Atlantic 10 and to the A-10 All-Academic Team. 

Holmes shared the player of the year award with Jordan King of Richmond. 

A junior from Goodyear, Ariz., Holmes this is third time Holmes has been named All-Atlantic 10 as well as to the A-10 All-Defensive Team.  He was a second team honoree as a freshman in 2021-22, conference and is the only first team selection from last season to repeat first team honors this year.  

He leads the A-10 in scoring (20.2) and UD in rebounding (8.3).  He is the only player in the league's top six in scoring, rebounding, FG%, and blocked shots.  After making just seven three-pointers in his first two seasons (and shooting .269 from deep), Holmes has made 29 this season, and is shooting .387 from beyond the arc.

Nationally, Holmes is one of two players in NCAA Division I who has more than 60 blocks, 60 dunks and 60 assists this season.  Zach Edey is the other.  Holmes has 63, 64 and 75 respectively.  He is on the active national player of the year watch lists for the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Naismith Trophy, the Los Angeles Athletic Club's Wooden Award and the USBWA's Oscar Robertson Trophy, as well as a finalist for the Basketball Hall of Fame's Karl Malone award.  He was named Second Team All-American by The Sporting News.

Brea leads the nation in three-point field goal percentage (.497, 89-of-179).  In the A-10  this season, he has the best 3-pt. FG% by 36 percentage points while taking 77 more three-pointers than the second best percentage shooter. This year's .497 is the best in the A-10 in 10 years.  It is the fifth-best ever in the league, and the best with more than 130 attempts,  The junior from Washington Height, N.Y. was  2021-22 Sixth Man of the Year as a freshman.  He played through injuries last year, and entered last season's off-season facing surgeries to place titanium rods in both legs and not knowing if he would play this season.

He is Dayton's third-leading scorer this season (11.0).

Santos is Dayton's second leading scorer (12.1) and rebounder (6.4).  A transfer from Pitt, he needed just 10 games at Dayton to surpass what he scored in two years at Pitt (116 points in 54 games).  The junior from Geneva, Ill. was named All-Tournament at the Shriners Children's Hospitals Charleston Classic, and was named A-10 Player of the Week that week.  

This is the sixth consecutive year that Dayton has had at least two players named All-Atlantic 10.  

Dayton, ranked 24th in this week's Associated Press and Coaches Polls, finished the regular season 24-6 overall and 14-4 in the Atlantic 10.  UD's four conference losses were by a total of 16 points, and the two non-conference defeats were at the hands of Houston and at Northwestern.  

The Flyers are the No. 3 seed in this week's Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship in Brooklyn.  Dayton will play its first game of the tournament on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET against a team that will emerge from sixth seed Duquesne, 11th seed Rhode Island and 14th seed Saint Louis.
