HIGH POINT, N.C. - The University of Dayton baseball team split its series-opening doubleheader with High Point University on Saturday afternoon at Williard Stadium, falling in game one 13-7 before bouncing back to take game two, 10-2.
Freshman
Connor Fennell dazzled on the mound for the #FlyBoys in game two, striking out three and allowing just two runs in 5.1 innings of work. UD's offense was powered by senior
Carlos Castillo and sophomore
Eddie Yamin IV, who both hit grand slams in the game.
GAME ONE - High Point 13 Dayton 7
High Point jumped ahead early thanks to a pair of second-inning homers and controlled play the rest of the way, using an eight-run fifth inning to distance themselves from UD. In total, the Panthers slugged four homers in game one.
UD plated six runs in the fifth and sixth innings, getting its first two in the game from sophomore
Ivan Arias's first career home run.Â
The Flyers made things interesting in the seventh when sophomore
Eddie Yamin IV brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, but a three-run eighth from HPU put the game out of reach.
GAME TWO - Dayton 10 High Point 2
The day's second game started as a pitcher's dual, as Fennell stymied the Panthers' offense through the first five innings. Unfortunately the Flyers' bats were kept quiet through their first four innings as well, but the bats came alive in a big way in the fifth.
Freshman
David Mendez led off the inning with a walk, followed by a walk to senior
Paxton Tomaini and a single by junior centerfielder
David Pedanou loaded the bases. That's when Castillo came through with a two-out grand slam, his first home run of the season and first career grand slam.
Dayton tacked on a run in the sixth, and the knockout blow came in the top of the ninth, as the #FlyBoys plated five runs. Castillo drove in his fifth run of the contest with an RBI single to start the ninth, and after a pair of walks, Yamin launched his first home run of the season and second career grand slam beyond the left field wall.
Senior
Nick Wissman pitched the final 2.2 innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit en route to his third save of the season.
