Men’s Soccer Wins Wolstein Classic Title

The Flyers Outscored Opponents 7-1 Last Weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team finished up the Wolstein Classic Sunday with a commanding 4-0 win over SIU-Edwardsville at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

The Flyers (3-1-0) wrapped up the weekend with a pair of victories while the Cougars (0-2-1) still look for their first win of the season.

Dayton won the 2024 Wolstein Classic title and had four players named to the All-Tournament team in Hjalti Sigurdsson, Joseph Melto Quiah, Martin Bakken, and Miles Bonham.

SCORING BREAKDOWN
  • 43:28 – Graduate student Hjalti Sigurdsson heads home his first goal of the year off the assist from junior Joseph Melto Quiah.
  • 52:00 – Melto Quiah then doubled Dayton's lead in the 53rd minute after juking out the SIUE defender and banking the shot off the far post and in. It was his second goal of the season.
  • 63:27 – Sigurdsson gets his second goal of the game and season off the assist from freshman Andrew Armstrong off the set piece.
  • 65:16 – Senior Ethan Sassine stole the ball directly from the SIUE defender and fakes out the keeper before driving it home for his third goal of the campaign.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Flyers finished with 31 shots to the Cougars' nine attempts and put a season-high 15 shots on target.
  • SIUE entered the preseason ranked No 25 in the country, but has gotten off to a rough start against challenging opponents.
  • Fouls were even at 8-8.
  • There were three cautions in the game, all by SIUE.
  • UD benefited from a 10-4 corner kick advantage.
  • Sigurdsson led the Flyers with six shots from a defensive position while Sassine and Melto Quiah added five each.
  • Dayton played 16 different players in the win.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"Excellent performance from start to finish today," said head coach Dennis Currier. "We controlled the game extremely well. We have been playing very well and the difference this weekend was finishing our chances."
