Football Falls At Indiana State, 24-13

Flyers Triple Sycamores In Yardage, But Two ISU Defensive Scores Prove Costly

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – A strong defensive effort by the University of Dayton was not enough Saturday evening in Terre Haute, Ind. as Indiana State won at home 24-13.

The Dayton D held ISU to 92 yards in offense and just five first downs, but an interception returned for a 90-yard touchdown and a fumble returned for a 12-yard TD was too much to overcome.

Gideon Lampron led UD with 13 tackles (six solo), while fellow linebacker Aiden McKinley added 10.  Lampron also had 2.5 tackles in the backfield.

The Flyers gained 326 yards in the game, with 291 coming through the air.  Quarterback Drew VanVleet was 26 for 40 passing and two TD.

Dayton is now 1-1 on the year, and Indiana State is 1-2.

GAME RECAP
1st Quarter – Indiana State 7, Dayton 0
•    The UD defense held Indiana State to negative two yards in total offense, but the Sycamores held a 7-0 advantage on the strength of a 90-yard interception return with 52 seconds left in the period.
•    Dayton out-gained Indiana State 79 to -2.
•    Flyer QB Drew VanVleet was six-of-nine passes for 60 yards and the interception.
•    UD's average starting field position was its own 21, while ISU started on its own 37 on average.
2nd Quarter – Indiana State 14, Dayton 0
•    The Flyers out-gained the Sycamores 59-20, but home team added another TD with a scoop-and-score from 12 yards out after a sack halfway through the quarter.
•    At this point in the game, the ISU offense had 15 yards, and the ISU defense had 14 points.
•    VanVleet was five-for-eight for another 60 yards.
•    First downs were eight for Dayton, one for ISU.
•    Field position continued to be a factor.  Dayton's average start to a drive was its own 14 yard-line, Indiana State's was its own 35.
3rd Quarter – Indiana State 21, Dayton 0
•    Offensive yardage evened out after halftime, with Dayton gaining 61 yards and Indiana State getting 60.
•    Field position did not.  UD's first three series began on its own 25, 12 and 14-yard lines, while ISU started on its own 20 and 30, and the Dayton 32.
•    The short field led to the first offensive touchdown of the night when on 4th-and-1, the Sycamore runner broke through the line for a 23-yard TD that accounted at that time for nearly a third of the Indiana State offensive yardage.
•    Luke Brenner returned his first kickoff of the year 60 yards to give Dayton the ball to start in Indiana State territory for the first time all night.
4th Quarter – Indiana State 24, Dayton 13
•    UD scored on the first play of the quarter, a seven-yard pass from VanVleet to Alec Keathley.
•    The Dayton defense forced a three-and-out, and the Flyers moved into the red zone, but VanVleet's fourth-down completion to a diving Brenner was ruled less than a yard short for a first down at the 8:46 mark.
•    UD turned the ball over on downs again near midfield with 3:41 left, setting up a 42-yard Indiana State field goal.
•    UD drove 69 yards in seven plays to score with 26 seconds to go.  VanVleet hit Gavin Lochow for a 19-yards TD.
•    An onside kick was unsuccessful, and ISU only had to kneel once to claim its first win of the year.
