COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team traveled up the road to the state capital Wednesday to take on No. 9/8 Western Michigan and picked up a hard-fought 1-1 tie.
The Flyers (4-1-1) keep their four-game unbeaten streak alive while the Broncos (5-0-3) push their's to 29 straight games.
SCORING BREAKDOWN
- 27:44 – Western Michigan took the initial lead with a goal in the 28th minute from Braxton Arpachinda.
- 43:52 – Freshman Andrew Armstrong cut the ball past the Bronco goalkeeper and drew the foul, earning the PK. Graduate student Hjalti Sigurdsson then stepped then calmly drove the penalty home to even the score just before halftime.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Flyers faced another one of the top offensive teams in the nation and out-shot the Broncos 18-14.
- Reigning A-10 Defensive Player of the Week Dario Caetano recorded a season-high six saves, including a few crucial ones late to clinch the draw.
- Fouls were 9-7 in favor of the visitors.
- Current A-10 Offensive Player of the Week led the Flyers with six shots in the contest while junior Joseph Melto Quiah had three.
- There were four cautions in the contest, two from each team.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"It was a very high level game tonight and I thought the team played very well," said head coach
Dennis Currier. "WMU is deservedly a top ranked team and very difficult to break down. We created enough chances to pull the upset off, but just couldn't convert. Dario (Caetano) did an exceptional job on their big chance late in the game to preserve the draw."
