Football Pulls Away For 47-14 Win At Marist

Jake Coleman Grabs Two Of Drew VanVleet’s Five TD Passes

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The University of Dayton football team scored the last 33 points of the game to open Pioneer Football League play with a 47-14 win Saturday at Marist.

UD out-gained Marist 443 to 230, and Dayton gained 25 first downs while allowing 16. 

Flyer QB Drew VanVleet completed 23 of 35 passes for 323 yards, with five touchdowns and one interception.  Linebacker Gideon Lampron led the Dayton defensive effort with eight tackles, with 3.0 TFL, 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hurries.

Dayton is now 3-1 on the year.

GAME RECAP
First Quarter – Dayton 7, Marist 7

•    Turnovers deep in each team's own territory set up both of the opening period's touchdowns.
•    A muffed punt put Dayton just 24 yards away, and two plays later, Drew VanVleet hit Mason Hackett out of the backfield for a 10-yard score.
•    An interception gave Marist the ball at the UD 32.
•    Six plays later, Red Fox QB Sonny Mannino took it in from the seven to the game 7-7.
Second Quarter – Dayton 27, Marist 14
•    UD got the ball back right at the  start of the second quarter and kept it for nearly six minutes, driving 84 yards in 11 plays to retake the lead.
•    VanVleet and Gavin Lochow connected for  two-yard pass with 9:19 left in the half.
•    Marist answered with its own long drive, needing 10 plays to travel 78 yards.  Jack Melore caught a 14-yard pass from Mannino with 5:42 to go until halftime
•    UD answered with another TD when Luke Brenner took a jet sweep taking the pitch in front of VanVleet. And flew around left end.  The end result was a 69-yard TD pass, VanVleet to Brenner.
•    The Flyers got a pair of Danny Baker field goals in the last two minutes.
•    The first one was a 20-yarder at the 1:43 mark.  The big play for that one was a 30-yard punt return by Paul Kelly.
•    The second one was from 23-yards out as time expired.  Dayton forced a three-and-out and was able to move the ball 51 yards, with the bulk coming on a 35-yard pass to Jake Coleman.
3rd Quarter – Dayton 33, Marist 14
•    The Flyers out-gained the Red Foxes 85-30 in the quarter, with six Dayton first downs compared to two for Marist.
•    UD's scoring drive was a 13- play, 65-yard grinder that ended with a VanVleet-to-Coleman 18-yard score with 6:43 to go.
•    It was Coleman's first touchdown catch of the season.
4th Quarter – Dayton 47, Marist 14
•    The Flyers scored on a 78-yard drive and an one-yard drive in the fourth quarter.
•    Dayton needed 12 players for go 78 yards for the first score.
•    Coleman doubled his TD total for the year with a 15-yarder from VanVleet.
•    Vincent Firenze blocked a Marist punt and recovered it on the one, leading to Cade Beam's one-yard forceful TD run.

BY THE NUMBERS
•    Drew VanVleet was 23 of 35 passing for a career-best 323 yards, with five TD passes and one interception.
•    The five TD passes are the second-most in a game for a Flyer quarterback.  Kevin Hoyng first did it against Morehead State in 2007, and Jack Cook did it at Butler in 2018.  Cook also holds the school record (6 vs. Jacksonville in 2019).
•    Mason Hackett carried the ball 28 times for 110 yards, his first career 100-yard game.  His only pass reception went for a 10-yard score.
•    Tight end Alec Keathley led UD with six catches for 30 yards.
•    Jake Coleman grabbed five passes for 114 yards and two TD.
•    Luke Brenner caught two passes for 78 yards, but blew the doors off everyone in the yards-after-catch department with 81 YAC.
•    Gideon ESPN Lampron filled the stat sheet for the Dayton defense – 8 tackles, 4 solo hits, 3.0 TFL, 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hurries.
•    Fellow linebackers Aiden McKinley and Sam Schmiesing each added six.
•    Cornerback Cam Cope had two of UD's four passes broken up.
•    On special teams, Paul Kelly averaged 22.5 yards on two punt returns and Gavin Lochow averaged 24.7 yards on three kickoff returns.
•    Punter Logan Forcum averaged 41.0 yards on five punts, and only two of them were returned for zero yards.

•    Dayton has its second bye week of the season next week.
•    The Flyers will return to action at home against Davidson on Saturday, Oct. 12.  
•    Game time is 12 Noon ET.
