DAYTON - The University of Dayton Women's Basketball team fell to Richmond by a score of 72- 83 on Sunday Afternoon at UD Arena.
The Flyers (12-8, 6-3 A-10) drop their third conference game of the year and fall to third place in the A-10 while Richmond (17-5, 8-1) further solidifies their spot atop the conference standings.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 14, Richmond 19
- Ivy Wolf opened the scoring for the Flyers with a drive to the bucket for a layup in the first minute of the game.
- Nicole Stephens then found a slashing Jayda Johnson for UD's second basket of the afternoon.
- Stephens finished through contact in the paint to make the Flyer lead 6-4.
- Stephens continued to facilitate the offense on the next possession, dishing a beautiful pass to Arianna Smith in the paint to push the Flyers ahead with 5:46 left in the quarter.
- After the Spiders took the lead at 9-11, Stephens knocked down a three to put Dayton back up by a single point with just under four minutes left to play in the quarter.
- Richmond would respond with a three of their own but Smith finished off a find from Stephens to tie the game back at 14.
- The Flyers ended the quarter amid a three-minute scoring drought and faced a deficit going into the second period.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 28, Richmond 34
- Neither team was able to muster a point through the first three and a half minutes of the quarter until Richmond made a layup through contact to push their lead to 14-21.
- Dayton got their first points of the quarter as Olivia Leung knocked down a corner three to make the score 17-23.
- Molly O'Riordan then got herself in the scoring column with a finish in the post to cut the deficit to 19-26 with 3:35 left in the half.
- Leung grabbed a steal in transition and was unopposed on her way to the hoop for an easy layup.
- After getting a stop on defense, O'Riordan grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up to push the UD run to 7-0, cutting the deficit to just two points with a minute and a half left in the half.
- Another O'Riordan putback made the score 26-28 in the final minute.
- Richmond knocked down a three to extend their lead to two possessions but a mid-range jumper from Wolf cut it back down to three.
- The Spiders hit a three at the buzzer to take a six-point lead into halftime.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 52, Richmond 60
- Stephens opened up the second half scoring with a fadeaway mid-range shot, giving her seven on the afternoon.
- After Richmond responded with a bucket of their own, Rikki Harris converted an and one to draw the Flyers a little bit closer at 33-36.
- Another response from Richmond once again made the deficit six but Wolf converted on a layup to make the score 35-39 with 7:46 left in the quarter.
- The hot start continued on both ends as a layup from Smith was answered by a three for Richmond. Nayo Lear responded to that with a mid-range finish of her own.
- Lear finished off a nice drive from the corner with a layup through contact to make the score 43-49 with 4:51 left in the quarter.
- Lear stayed in control out of the media timeout as she drew a foul and knocked down both foul shots, giving her six of the Flyers' last eight points.
- Wolf knocked down her first three of the afternoon to make the score 48- 54 with 2:30 left in the quarter.
- After a Richmond basket, Stephens finished off a layup to keep the game within six points.
- Wolf then became the first Flyer in double-digit scoring as she finished off a layup to give her 11 on the afternoon.
4th Quarter: Dayton 72, Richmond 83
- Richmond started the final quarter with six unanswered points but Wolf hit a three and found Smith in the post to draw the Flyers back within single digits at 57-66 with 6:33 left in the game.
- Wolf then knocked down two at the free-throw line to push the run to 7-0.
- Richmond put an end to a run with five unanswered points but the Flyers continued to fight as Smith finished through a foul and converted the free throw to cut the deficit back to nine at 62-71.
- After a response from the Spiders, Stephens hit a mid-range floater as the Flyers converted their fourth consecutive field goal attempt.
- Smith then finished off of an inbounds pass to cut the deficit down to eight.
- A block by Harris on the defensive end led to Smith getting to the line with two and a half minutes to play. She converted both free throws to draw the Flyers within two possessions at 68-74.
- Wolf hit a three in the final seconds to bring the Flyers within 10 at 72-82.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- 3- Three Flyers (Wolf, Smith, and Stephens) scored in double figures.
- 7- Smith recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
