CHICAGO - The University of Dayton women's basketball team traveled to Loyola Chicago University Wednesday night and held on for a 67-64 victory in the Windy City.
The Flyers (13-8, 7-3 A-10) earn a valuable road win in Atlantic 10 play while the Ramblers (11-11, 3-8 A-10) fall to .500 on the year.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 18, Loyola Chicago 14
- Dayton got off to a strong start defensively holding Loyola to an 0-for-4 start and a shot clock violation in the opening minute.
- Senior Arianna Smith scored the first six points for the Flyers to put them ahead in the opening few minutes.
- Loyola didn't get its first field goal until the 6:10 mark of the game as UD led 8-4 and held the hosts to 14 percent from the floor.
- The Flyers got in foul trouble early with the aggressiveness though and the Ramblers had some chances to pull back from the line.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 35, Loyola Chicago 28
- Smith became the first player in double digits with her 10th point, going 5-for-5 from the field.
- Loyola went without a point for nearly three minutes as Dayton added to its lead.
- At the media break, the Flyers held a 28-19 advantage over the Ramblers.
- Senior Ivy Wolf joined her teammate Smith with her 10th point of the game.
- Junior Shantavia Dawkins knocked down some free throws to put UD up by double digits, 30-19.
- Flyers held a seven-point lead at the half while shooting 50 percent from the field.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 47, Loyola Chicago 42
- Both teams came out sluggish offensively in the second half as neither team made a dent on the score until a drive and bucket by Loyola at the 7:30 mark cut the margin to five.
- Dayton didn't get its first bucket of the half until a layup by Wolf with 6:34 to play in the quarter.
- Fouls started to rack up again for both teams and it was 37-34 in favor of the Flyers at the midway point.
- The Ramblers closed the gap again to one before a three from freshman Olivia Leung gave UD more room with just over two to go in the quarter.
- Graduate student Rikki Harris converted the and-1 with :18 on the clock to put Dayton up 47-42.
4th Quarter: Dayton 67, Loyola Chicago 64
- Dayton was forced to call a timeout with 7:22 to play after a 9-2 run tied the game up at 51-51.
- The Ramblers took their first lead of the game with a jumper at the 6:52 mark, 53-52.
- UD put a 6-0 run together of its own to lead 58-53 and Loyola called a timeout with 4:58 on the clock.
- The hosts countered with a pair of threes to cut it to one, 60-59.
- Graduate student Nicole Stephens drove and scored off the assist from Smith to make it 64-61.
- Dayton managed to get a stop on the other end, extending the Loyola drought.
