DAYTON – The University of Dayton football team bounced back from a tough loss last week to upset No. 16/19 Presbyterian, 35-19, Saturday at Welcome Stadium.Â
The Flyers (6-2, 4-1 PFL) move into a tie for second in the Pioneer Football League standings with the Blue Hose (7-1, 3-1 PFL) suffer their first league defeat.Â
GAME RECAP
1st Quarter – Dayton 7, Presbyterian 13
- Presbyterian jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on just the second play of the game with a 72-yard passing touchdown.Â
- Dayton answered back with a 79-yard run by junior Gavin Lochow to score the first points for the Flyers.Â
- Presbyterian scored again on a two-yard rushing touchdown, but redshirt sophomore Tehron Spencer blocked the extra point to hold the Blue Hose to just six.Â
- Lochow completed 6 carries for 73 yards at the end of the first quarter.Â
2nd Quarter – Dayton 28, Presbyterian 13
- The Flyers started the quarter with a 32-yard rushing touchdown by junior Luke Hansen, giving UD its first lead of the game, 14-13.
- An interception made by Dayton redshirt sophomore Josh Williams ended the Blue Hose' rally. Â
- Dayton scored a 32-yard rushing touchdown by Lochow for a score of 21-13 UD.Â
- Redshirt sophomore Ethan Thulin scored on a pass from redshirt sophomore Drew VanVleet for a touchdown with just six seconds left in the half to make it a two-possession game. Â
3rd Quarter – Dayton 35, Presbyterian 19
- UD interception made by redshirt sophomore Vincent Firenze was returned for 20 yards to make it 35-13.
- Dayton continued to eat up the clock on offense and stifled Presbyterian on the other side of the field.
- The Blue Hose had the ball for 8:14 compared to 6:46 for the Flyers in the third quarter.
- Presbyterian was finally able to add to its score with a late passing touchdown in the third, capping off a 10-play drive.
4th Quarter – Dayton 35, Presbyterian 19
- Presbyterian managed to move the ball down the field, but Dayton redshirt junior Mac Grant intercepted the ball at the 15-yard line to stop the rally attempt by the Blue Hose.
- Dayton was content to continue to run the ball and burn the clock as Presbyterian was unable to answer defensively.
- Redshirt sophomore Brandon Martin recorded a sack and hit the running back in the back field on the next play to hype up the Flyer defense and crowd even more.
- The nationally-ranked Blue Hose just did not play their best as the Flyers earned the upset.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
2019 – Dayton has not beaten a ranked team since Indiana State, ranked 14th, ending with a score of 42-35 on Aug. 7, 2019.
21-0 – The Flyers outscored the Blue Hose 21-0 in the second quarter alone.
174 –
Gavin Lochow recorded 174 all-purpose yards: 133 rushing and 41 receiving. He also attempted one pass at quarterback.
2 – Lochow also ran for two touchdowns while
Luke Hansen rushed for one.
274-147 – Dayton rushed the ball 49 times for 274 yards while Presbyterian had 147 yards on 37 carries.
