DAYTON – The University of Dayton men's basketball team controlled the tempo throughout the game in a 91-82 win over Bethune-Cookman University Saturday night at UD Arena.
The Flyers (3-1) earned their third home victory while Wildcats (1-3) showed fight in a tough road environment.
Senior Javon Bennett was 7-of-7 from the charity stripe while he and teammate De'Shayne Montgomery had four made threes each to lead the way.
Dayton sunk 17 more free throws than Bethune-Cookman, going 26-of-32 from the line while the Wildcats were 9-of-15.
GAME RECAP
First Half – Dayton 45, Bethune-Cookman 39

Despite an early lead by Dayton, Bethune-Cookman took a 5-2 advantage before a deep three by sophomore Amael L'Etang tied it up before the first media timeout.

Senior Javon Bennett recorded a steal in the back-court and found junior De'Shayne Montgomery for the bucket and the foul to put UD up 12-9 by the 14:06 mark.

The Wildcats answered and came back to pull ahead 18-16 at the midway point in the opening half.

At the 5:57 mark, Bennett hit his second straight three to cap off a 14-2 run by the Flyers that gave them a 34-26 lead. Bennett became the first player in double-figures as well.

WIth 1:26 to go in the half, Bennett called his own number once again and drilled his fourth three to add to Dayton's margin, 45-35.

The Flyers shot 48 percent in the opening half while the Wildcats matched them with 47 percent overall.

The difference in the opening 20 minutes was Dayton went 8-of-12 from three and 9-of-12 from the free throw line.

There were eight lead changes in the first half with the Flyers leading for 11:09 and by as much as 10.
Second Half – Dayton 91, Bethune-Cookman 82

The Flyers went inside the paint to start the second half as L'Etang scored on the opening possession.

The Wildcats countered with a couple of tough buckets to close the gap to six at 51-45.

Just after the 15:00 mark, Montgomery converted his third three to make it 56-47 in favor of Dayton. He hit another one the next time down the court to give him 14 points in the effort.

UD continued to build its lead and found itself with a 64-52 advantage going into the 12:00 media timeout.

Neither team was able to make a field goal for a nearly three-minute stretch with the defenses starting to settle in.

L'Etang nailed his second three to give Dayton its biggest lead of the game at 13 points with 9:26 to play.

Bethune-Cookman came alive and narrowed the margin to six, 74-68, with just over six to go in the contest, despite Dayton going on a 4-for-4 stretch.

The Flyers were able to lean on the free throw line to slow things down and extend their lead once again as senior Jordan Derkack knocked down a pair with 3:51 to go to get the advantage back to a dozen.

UD proved to be too much down the stretch for BC and held off the late rally by the Wildcats.
