Football Closes Out Season With 42-14 Win At Davidson

Flyers Improve To 7-4 Overall, 5-3 In Pioneer Football League

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Dayton football team rolled to a 42-14 win Saturday at Davidson in the season finale for both teams. Dayton led 35-0 after three quarters thanks in part to 21 points off of turnovers.

The Flyers improved their final record for the third consecutive season, ending 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the Pioneer Football League.
 

GAME RECAP

1st Quarter – Dayton 13, Davidson 0

• Flyer cornerback Josh Williams got the scoring going with a 32-yard pick-six.

• Williams set up UD's second score with another interception.

• Dayton needed four plays to drive 30 yards, with Luke Hansen taking it in from the one.

• Junior QB Liam Poronsky opened his first career start by going five-of five passing for 44 yards.

2nd Quarter – Dayton 13, Davidson 0

• Both Flyer possessions ended in Davidson territory, but UD had no points to show for it.

• At halftime, all five Dayton drives ended in Davidson territory, while Davidson only crossed the 50 into Dayton territory once.

• The Flyers outgained the Wildcats 187 to 126 in the first half.

3rd Quarter – Dayton 35, Davidson 0

• UD took the second half kickoff and ran 10 straight times to drive 62 yards for the score.

• Luke Hansen had five carries for 47 yards, including a two-yarder for his second TD of the day.

• Dayton's successful two-point conversion was a backward pass to offensive tackle Matthew Barnes, who was uncovered in the formation, and untouched into the end zone.

• On Davidson's first play after the TD, Flyer Eli Kirk punch the ball out and recovered a fumble at the 17 yard line.

• Five plays later, Poronsky hit LeRoy Lewis IV for a 10-yard score, his first as a college player.

4th Quarter – Dayton 42, Davidson 14

• Davidson broke up the shutout bid on the first play of the third quarter, and then added another TD on its next possession.

• UD responded with its longest drive of the game, a 10-play, 65-yard trip that took nearly five minutes off the clock.

• It ended with senior Levi Moell scoring his first college TD from 13 yards out.

BY THE NUMBERS

• 474 – Dayton had a season-high 474 yards in total offense.

• 11 – Gavin Lochow led UD with 11 receptions for 188 yards. He moved into sole possession of second place of the Flyer career reception list. His 161 catches only trails Adam Trautman's 178.

• 201 – Liam Poronsky was 16 of 22 passing for 201 yards, with two scores.

• 87 – Luke Hansen was the game's high ground gainer, with 87 yards on 15 attempts and two TD.

• 3 – Three Dayton runners ran for at least 40 yards in the game: Hansen, Tyler Brown (9 for 65) and Levi Moell (4 for 44).

• 4 – The UD defense came up with four turnovers in the game.

• 14 – Safety Luke Mitchell led UD with 14 tackles, twice as many as anyone else on the team. His nine solo hits were four more than any other Flyer.

• 2 – Defensive end Collin Ansel had two of Dayton's four sacks on the day.
