FORT MYERS, Fla. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team kicked off the Elevance Health Fort Myers Tip-Off Friday evening with a tough 92-66 loss to Butler University.
The Flyers (3-3) were unable to stop the Bulldogs (4-3) from behind the arc as they made 15 threes in the game.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 9, Butler 20
- UD was the first on the board with a take by senior Nayo Lear to open up the scoring.
- Butler countered with a second-chance basket before a three at the top of the key gave the Bulldogs the 5-2 lead by the 6:51 mark.
- After a slow start offensively for both teams, the Flyers faced a 7-4 deficit by the media timeout.
- Butler added another three to spark an 8-0 run over 1:15 to push its lead to double-digits, 15-5.
- Junior Ajok Madol scored a contested bucket to end the rally for the Bulldogs and cut the margin to single digits.
- Head coach Tamika Williams-Jeter was forced to call a timeout with 1:37 to go to try and prevent Butler from pulling away further.
- UD shot just 29 percent while Butler was 44 percent from the field.
- Madol led the Flyers with four points on 2-for-2 shooting.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 19, Butler 47
- Dayton recorded steals on the first two possessions of the second that lead to a basket by Lear, starting off the Flyers on a positive note.
- Junior Fatima Ibrahim put in work in the paint and used a nice double-move to get the basket over the Butler defender to make it 20-13.
- The Bulldogs didn't get a basket until 7:10 on the clock, but it was another three to make it a 10-point game once again.
- The Flyers found the majority of the points inside the paint with sophomore Molly O'Riordan adding to the effort as well.
- Five straight threes by Butler made it a 44-15 contest with just under two to go in the half, thanks to a 17-0 run.
- Lear ended the scoring drought with another drive to the hoop, giving her seven points in the game.
- UD was held to 27 percent while BU shot 55 percent overall and was 9-of-17 from three.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 41, Butler 67
- Ibrahim and the Flyers went right back inside for the first three baskets of the second half.
- Graduate student Nicole Stephens drilled a big three to keep momentum in UD's favor over the first four minutes.
- Fouls slowed things down though as Butler still held a 63-30 lead at the midway point of the third.
- UD was able to hold BU to a scoreless stretch of nearly three minutes as the clock ticked under three to go.
- Madol ended the quarter for Dayton with another tough, contested bucket.
4th Quarter: Dayton 66, Butler 92
- The two teams traded blows in a fast-paced opening two minutes of the fourth.
- A 13-7 run by the Flyers to start the quarter forced a Butler timeout with 6:48 on the clock and UD down 74-54.
- The Bulldogs were held without a field goal for over three minutes as the Flyers looked to battle their way back, before yet another three by Butler ended the skid.
- Madol and Lear continued to add to their total, leading their team down the final stretch.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Ajok Madol posted career highs of 17 and four assists, as well as four rebounds.
14 –
Fatima Ibrahim was just shy of a career high with 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting and six boards.
9 – Butler's nine threes in the first half were already a season-high for the Bulldogs. They finished with 15 made threes on 26 attempts.
42 – Dayton found much of its success in the paint with 42 points in the post.
44% - The Flyers shot 44 percent from the field while the Bulldogs shot 59 percent.
