FORT MYERS, Fla. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team finished up play at the Elevance Health Fort Myer's Tip-Off with a roller-coaster 59-58 win over Kansas Saturday night.
The Flyers (4-3) earned a marquee win to finish up the trip while the Jayhawks (6-2) were winless in Florida.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 24, Kansas 16
- Dayton struck first with a quality bucket from junior Ajok Madol on the opening possession of the game.
- Senior Nayo Lear followed up with an and-one to give the Flyers an early 5-0 advantage. Two more free throws by Lear and an layup made it 9-0 before Kansas had its first points.
- Lear scored 10 straight points for the Flyers.
- Graduate student Nicole Stephens and Madol hit two more threes to make it 18-7 before the media timeout. UD was shooting 75 percent up to that point, including 3-of-3 from three.
- Senior Shantavia Dawkins earned her first start of the season and played aggressively on both ends of the floor.
- The Flyers hit their free throws in the final few minutes and took the 8-point lead into the second.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 33, Kansas 30
- Kansas nailed a three to cut the margin to five points in the opening minute.
- After a slow start to the quarter, Dayton finally managed some points via a three from junior Jayda Johnson at the 7:08 mark.
- Junior Fatima Ibrahim provided the strength in the post, battling for a tough bucket just before the media break.
- The Jayhawks responded though and closed the gap to just one, 31-30, in the final minute of the half.
- UD shot 42 percent overall while Kansas shot 43 percent, but the Flyers made one more three and were 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
- Lear had a team-high 10 points while Dawkins had six and Madol had five.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 46, Kansas 44
- Kansas come out firing to start the second half, using a 5-0 run to take a 35-33 lead. It was the Jayhawks first lead of the game.
- Dayton didn't get its first bucket of the quarter until the 6:41 mark with a three by Jayda Johnson.
- Stephens followed up with a three to tie it up at 39-39 midway through the third.
- With 3:56 to go, Kansas was able to get an and-one to take a three-point lead.
- Just over a minute later, Ibrahim earned an and-one of her own to put UD up 44-42.
- Lear took it upon herself to finish the quarter strong with two tough baskets to give the Flyers the lead going into the fourth.
4th Quarter: Dayton 59, Kansas 58
- The score stayed tight in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter as both teams traded baskets and neither willing to budge.
- Madol converted a pair of free throws to put Dayton up 50-49 with 6:50 to go in the quarter.
- That score held through the media timeout as the physicality slowed the game down and fouls started to reach the bonus.
- Both teams went over three minutes without a field goal before Jayda Johnson's three ended the skid.
- Dayton called a timeout with 2:11 to go and a 53-51 lead to settle in for the final stretch.
- Madol took it to the hoop and scored through traffic to give the Flyers a two-point lead and under a minute to go.
- On the other end, Dayton had back-to-back defensive stops. It was what the Flyers needed in the end to fight off the Jayhawk rally.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
10 – In the first quarter,
Nayo Lear scored 10 straight points. She finished with a team-high 16 points in the effort.
14 to 6 – Dayton managed to make 14 of its 18 free throw attempts while Kansas only made 6-of-6.
9 and 7 –
Ajok Madol chipped in nine points and seven rebounds with two assists.
46-23 – Dayton outrebounded Kansas 46-23 in the contest.
