WASHINGTON. D.C. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team opened up Atlantic 10 play Wednesday at George Washington and fell short, 54-42.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 10, George Washington 11
  • Dayton struck on the opening possession with a three from junior Ajok Madol from the corner.
  • GW quickly answered with an and-one to tie it up at 3-3 in the first two minutes of action.
  • The Revs managed to hit a three of an offensive board and added a layup to take the 8-3 lead by the six-minute mark. That score held through the media break.
  • Grad student Maliyah Johnson hit a three with 2:59 on the clock to end a scoring drought for the Flyers and make it an 8-6 game.
  • Sophomore Molly O'Riordan had a nice jumper followed by a steal and transition bucket by M. Johnson to close the gap to one at the end of the quarter.
  • Dayton held GW scoreless for the final 1:37 of the first as well.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 19, George Washington 29
  • Freshman MG Talle made her collegiate debut and did not take long to open her account as she took the pass, drove to the basket, and scored her first points as a Flyer to give UD the 12-11 lead. The next time down the court, she did the same thing to give her four points.
  • Grad student Nicole Stephens continued the gameplan of driving to the paint and earned a bucket and a foul to add to Dayton's advantage.
  • Midway through the quarter, the Revs tied the game up at 19-19 as the defenses started to settle in for both teams.
  • Out of the break, GW pulled ahead by five, 24-19, as UD went scoreless for over six minutes.
  • The Revs hit a three at the buzzer to put the Flyers in a 10-point hole.
  • UD shot 33.3 percent and was just 1-of-5 from the free throw line in the first half.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 33, George Washington 40
  • Dayton came out of the lockerroom at the half and was able to end the scoring drought from the 6:41 mark in the second quarter with a layup from junior Fatima Ibrahim off the nice entry pass from senior Nayo Lear.
  • Senior Shantavia Dawkins followed suit with her first basket of the game to cut it to six points in the opening minute.
  • The defense for the Flyers made things difficult for the Revs as they weren't able to extend their lead any further, not scoring until the 7:22 mark.
  • Talle continued to provide scoring for the Flyers as she reached the double-digit mark in her first game.
  • Dayton faced a seven-point deficit at the midway point in the third, 38-31.
  • That score held for the next few minutes as the physicality of the game made things tougher on both ends.
4th Quarter: Dayton 42, George Washington 54
  • GW got a steal and a transition bucket to start the fourth, making it a 42-33 contest.
  • Ibrahim ended another scoring skid for UD as she made a challenging shot over two defenders.
  • By the media timeout, the Flyers faced a 48-37 margin.
  • Maliyah Johnson drilled another three out of the break to make it an eight-point game.
  • The Flyers managed to put some quality possessions together, but just ran out of time.
