Third-Seeded #UDMSOC Hosting #6 VCU Friday In A-10 Quarterfinals

Flyers Making Program's 24th Appearance in the #A10MSOC Championship

DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team is set to host an Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinal-round match on campus Friday night. The third-seeded Flyers will welcome the sixth-seeded VCU Rams to Dayton for a 7 p.m. matchup at Baujan Field.

ABOUT DAYTON
Dayton (6-2-7, 4-1-3 A-10) is making the program's 24th appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship on Friday after earning the number-three seed. The Flyers' offense is led by senior Ethan Sassine with seven goals (1st A-10) and 16 points (3rd A-10) while junior Martin Bakken has netted five goals, including three game winners. In goal for UD, senior Gavin Krenecki has logged 1,260 minutes between the posts and has recorded 9 shutouts (4th NCAA) with a 0.50 GAA (7th NCAA) and a 0.854 save pct. (7th NCAA).

SCOUTING VCU
VCU (6-5-5, 3-2-3 A-10) closed out the regular season with a 2-1 win over Davidson last Saturday, earning the Rams the number-six seed for the championship. Sulaiman Abdul-Mateen is the Rams' leading goal scorer (4) while Andrey Salmeron has passed out a team-best four assists. Trevor Maloney is the team's primary goalkeeper with 15 starts over 16 games with a 1.38 GAA (7th A-10) and 45 saves (5th A-10).

SERIES STUFF
Dayton Leads, 8-5-2
Both Dayton and VCU earned a point in the pair's meeting earlier this season, a 0-0 draw in Richmond on Sept. 21. The Flyers and Rams were even with 10 shots apiece led by sophomore Andrew Armstrong who had two of his three shots coming on goal.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton closed out the 2025 regular season with a 1-0 win over Loyola Chicago at home Saturday night, earning the Flyers the number-three seed for the Atlantic 10 Championship. Junior Martin Bakken found the back of the net in the third minute, the goal proved to be his third game winner of the season, on an assist from sophomore Andrew Armstrong. The Flyers out-shot the Ramblers, 16-6, led by junior Felix Buabeng with a season-high-tying four shots.

RPI RANKINGS
In the NCAA's most recent DI Rating Percentage Index (RPI) through games on Nov. 5, Dayton ranked 127th according to NCAA.com. VCU came in at 39.

FLYER FACTS
• Dennis Currier is in his 21st season as head coach of the Flyers in 2025. His record at Dayton is 200-125-68 (.595) and his career win-loss mark sits at 388-174-80 (.667) over a total of 33 seasons. Currier has tallied the program's most wins (200) and most winning seasons (13).
• On Sept. 15, Farouq Ogundare picked up his first career Atlantic 10 weekly award after being named the league's Rookie of the Week. Following the first week of the season, three Flyers were recognized by the A-10. Ethan Sassine was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week, Gavin Krenecki garnered Defensive Player of the Week accolades and Mikkel Madsen secured the Rookie of the Week honor on Aug. 25.
• Five Flyers were named to the 2025 Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team: Andrew Armstrong, Martin Bakken, Miles Bonham, Ethan Sassine and Paul Yeboah.
• Dayton has won the Atlantic 10 Regular Season title four times (1998, 2000, 2009, 2020). The Flyers have captured the A-10 Championship title six times (1997, 1998, 2008, 2015, 2023, 2024) resulting in six appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Over 23 appearances in the A-10 Tournament, UD has tallied a 23-11-5 record in the conference postseason championship, reaching the title match nine times.
• The Flyers finished the 2024 season with a 14-3-3 overall record and a 5-1-2 conference mark, finishing in second place in regular-season play. 

UP NEXT
Following the results of Friday and Saturday's quarterfinal matches, the four remaining teams will be reseeded with the two highest remaining seeds hosting semifinal round matches on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
