DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team hosted Fordham on Saturday afternoon and won in a nail-biter. The Flyers (15-12, 9-7 A-10) stayed strong and dominated throughout the game, taking the win from the Rams.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 18, Fordham 8
- Senior Arianna Smith started the Flyers off with a layup following an assist from graduate student Nicole Stephens.
- First media timeout, Fordham and Dayton tied at 4.
- Junior Nayo Lear made her presence in the game with a quick layup to jump right back into action.
- A stolen ball by graduate student Rikki Harris led to a jumper by Smith at the 1:41 mark.
- Freshman Olivia Leung made her mark from the start, swishing a three-pointer which put the Flyers up by 8 points while 45 seconds remained.
- Lear led the Flyers with 7 points in the first quarter.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 32, Fordham 26
- Lear went coast to coast to start the second quarter off hot 22 seconds in.
- Harris put up a layup after a minute-and-a-half-point drought for the Flyers.
- Freshman Molly O'Riordan made a comeback after a rolled ankle to put the Flyers up by seven at the 1:49 mark.
- O'Riordan from the arch hit a three-pointer and sent the crowd into a frenzy.
- Flyers largest lead in the second quarter was 12 points.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 42, Fordham 40
- Senior Ivy Wolf made free throws to begin the second half's scoring for the Flyers.
- Senior Shannon Wheeler tossed up a layup after a quick pass from Harris, Flyers led by 6 at the 6:34 mark.
- Wolf passed a quick ball to O'Riordan for a successful shot at the 5:20 mark.
- Wolf put Dayton back in the lead by three after hitting a three-pointer at 1:33.
- After an exciting and high-intensity quarter, the Flyers led by two.
4th Quarter: Dayton 62, Fordham 57
- Harris crashed the board to put up Dayton's first points of the quarter.
- O'Riordan continued to make a presence on the court and rebounded the ball into a basket.
- Junior Shantavia Dawkins put up a layup to expand the lead to 48-44.
- Smith made one of two free throws.
- Stephens took advantage of a wide-open shot and fired from the three-point line.
- Wolf strengthened momentum with a jumper at the 3:20 mark.
- With 16 seconds remaining, Smith made one of two of her free throws.
- The game ended with two successful free throws from Lear.
