DAYTON – The University of Dayton football team returned home to Welcome Stadium and powered its way to a 48-14 victory over Stetson University Saturday afternoon.
The Flyers (3-1, 1-0 PFL) win their third game in a row and first league contest while the Hatters (1-4, 0-1 PFL) were unable to upset the hosts on Family Weekend. Â
GAME RECAP
1st Quarter – Dayton 21, Stetson 7
- Dayton got the ball first and did not need much time to drive 64 yards on five plays and 2:11 to finish with a 50-yard touchdown pass from redshirt sophomore Bryce Schondelmyer to junior Donovan Weatherly to put the hosts up 7-0 early.
- Stetson answered right away through with a 27-yard touchdown pass of its own to even the score at 7-7 with 9:43 on the clock.
- On the Flyers' next drive, UD was able to move the ball down the field once again and hit another big play with a 54-yard touchdown from Schondelmyer to redshirt sophomore Michael Mussari. It made it 14-7 with just under seven and a half to go in the opening quarter.
- Dayton forced a punt and took the ball back before marching down the field for the third straight possession, ending with another passing touchdown from Schondelmyer to Mussari, their second scoring connection of the game.
- The Flyers outgained the Hatters 184 to 61 yards in the first quarter.
2nd Quarter – Dayton 42, Stetson 14
- Stetson got the ball first to start the second quarter, but Dayton defense held them to a punt.
- The Flyers faced a fourth and one at the 11:30 mark and converted with a powerful rush by junior Luke Hansen.
- The Flyers scored on a 7-yard pass from Schondelmyer to junior Gavin Lochow completing a 10-play, 74-yard drive. It made the score 28-7 in favor of UD.
- Blocked punt by junior Sam Schmiesing– set up touchdown for the Flyers on a 7-yard pass thrown by Schondelmyer to redshirt junior Dominic Vrbancic.
- Stetson was able to answer at the 2:02 mark for an 11-yard touchdown.
- Dayton did not have its first punt of the game until the 1:39 mark in the first half.
- The Hatters were about to score with 10 seconds left before a pick-6 by redshirt sophomore Vincent Firenze halted the drive and gave the Flyers a 42-14 lead at the half.
- Mussari led the Flyers with five catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns while Schondelmyer went 14-for-17 with five TDs and no interceptions.
3rd Quarter – Dayton 48, Stetson 14
- After a slow start to the third quarter, UD was finally able to get the offense going again with another touchdown, this time a 7-yard rush by Hansen.
- With 4:13 to go in the third, redshirt sophomore cornerback Josh Williams intercepted the pass to give the offense the ball back.
- UD was able to go to the bench early on and were able to get reserves valuable playing time.Â
- The Flyers held the Hatters to zero passing yards in the third quarter.
4th Quarter – Dayton 48, Stetson 14
- Both teams relied on running the ball, which resulted in a running clock most of the fourth quarter.
- Redshirt sophomore quarterback Liam Poronski was behind center over the final stretch of the game, and did a good job of protecting the football and running the clock.
- In the end, the Dayton defense held off the Hatters and clinched its third straight victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Bryce Schondelmyer became the second Dayton quarterback ever to throw for five touchdowns in a half (Jack Cook vs Jacksonville in 2019) and fifth to have at least five TDs in a game (first since
Drew VanVleet vs Marist in 2024). He finished the game with 333 yards on 19-of-23 passing.
169 –
Michael Mussari recorded a career-high 169 yards receiving and two touchdowns on eight catches.
9 – Sam Schiesing led the Flyers with nine tackles.
2.5 – Fellow linebacker
Joe Kingsbury added eight tackles, a sack, and 2.5 tackles for loss.
7.3 to 4.7 – The Flyers averaged 7.3 yards per play compared to 4.7 yards for opposing teams.
