PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Dayton men's basketball team gutted out another road Atlantic 10 win on Tuesday night, topping Duquesne 71-65 at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
Playing without the services of two starters, the Flyers (13-4, 4-0 A-10) had four players finish the game in double-figures, led by senior
Keonte Jones, who tied his UD-career-high with 15 points. Dayton held Duquesne (9-8, 1-3 A-10) to a season-low 24 points in the first half, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
UD led by only two points with just under two minutes remaining, but the Flyers stood strong when the pressure rose, getting a
Javon Bennett jumper and six made free throws from Jones, Bennett and
De'Shayne Montgomery to put the game on ice.
Jones's 15 points led the way for Dayton, while Bennett finished the night with 14. Montgomery added 11 points and redshirt sophomore
Jaiun Simon had 10 for his third double-digit scoring effort of A-10 play. Senior
Jacob Conner and sophomore
Bryce Heard each had seven-point, six-rebound performances in the game.
GAME RECAP
1st Half – Dayton 33, Duquesne 24
- Senior Keonte Jones scored the first there points of the game for the Flyers, making a free throw along with a layup off a nice feed from Javon Bennett.
- Bennett knocked down a pair of free throws to even the score at 5-5.
- Senior Jacob Conner came off the bench to provide a spark, draining a three-pointer and following it up with steal and dunk to put UD ahead 11-6
- Junior De'Shayne Montgomery got his first basket of the game after dicing through the defense and finishing an acrobatic layup to put the Flyers on top 13-8.
- Freshman Damon Friery knocked down a triple to put Dayton ahead 16-8.
- Montgomery converted a turnover into a basket to push UD's advantage to double-digits at 18-8.
- After Duquesne broke double-digits, Jones made baskets on consecutive trips down the court to put the Flyers ahead 22-11 with 7:39 to go in the half.
- Jones snapped a scoreless streak of nearly four minutes with a layup, putting Dayton ahead 25-16.
- Redshirt sophomore Jaiun Simon made a pair of free throws to give UD a 27-19 advantage with 2:33 to go in the half.
- Montgomery nailed a corner three at the buzzer to put the Flyers on top 33-24 at the break.
2nd Half– Dayton 71, Duquesne 65
- The Dukes started the half on a 6-0 run that was snapped by a free throw by sophomore Bryce Heard, keeping UD ahead 34-30.
- Jones made a pair of free throws to keep UD ahead by a slim 36-32 margin.
- Bennett made Dayton's first field goal of the half to stop a 5-0 Duquesne run and give the Flyers the lead back, 38-37.
- A lay-in through traffic by Jacob Conner put UD ahead 40-37 with 14:25 remaining.
- Freshman Sean Pouedet knocked down a pair of free throws to give Dayton a 47-40 advantage.
- Pouedet twisted through the defense to score another and make the Flyers' advantage seven at 49-42.
- Simon sank a pair of free throws to make Dayton's lead 51-47 with 8:40 to go.
- Bennett went on a one-man 6-0 run, cashing back-to-back three-pointers to put UD ahead 57-50 with 5:33 to go.
- Simon swished three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to keep the Flyers advantage at eight, 63-55.
- After a Dukes' 6-0 run, Bennett drilled a pull-up jumper from inside the arc to push Dayton's lead back to 65-51.
- Jones pushed the lead to six with a pair of free throw makes with :27 remaining, giving the Flyers a 67-61.
- Duquesne made a basket with :12 remaining, but Bennett calmly sank two free throws with 11 seconds left to give the Flyers
