PITTSBURGH - The University of Dayton women's basketball team continued its road stretch and wrapped up its season series against Duquesne University with 75-58 victory.
The Flyers (10-9, 3-5 A-10) got their second conference road win while the Dukes (7-11, 0-8 A-10) remain at the bottom of the Atlantic 10 standings.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 22, Duquesne 6
- Dayton jumped out to the initial lead with a three from sophomore Olivia Leung on the first possession for the visitors. She followed that up on the next possession with another three and drew the foul to send her to the line. Just a few moments later, Leung earned another and-one with a drive and another drawn foul.
- The Flyers jumped out to a 15-0 lead before the Dukes called a timeout with 6:21 on the clock.
- Duquesne didn't get its first point of the game until the 5:24 mark with a layup.
- Dayton kept the foot on the gas and took a double-digit lead into the second quarter.
- The Flyers shot 50 percent and hit four threes in the opening 10 minutes while holding the Dukes to 12.5 percent from the field.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 39, Duquesne 18
- Senior Maliyah Johnson came off the bench to add to UD's lead with her first basket to make it a 24-6 lead.
- Leung scored again at the 7:10 mark to give her double figures and Dayton a 20-point lead.
- Once again, Duquesne was unable to score until the 6:33 mark of the second quarter.
- By the media break, the Flyers held a 27-11 advantage.
- Maliyah Johnson hit a big corner three to push the bench scoring to 13 on the game out of 32 points.
- Junior Ajok Madol hit another three for UD with 1:26 to go to push the margin to 21-points.
- Dayton finished the half shooting 42.4 percent from the floor while Duquesne was shooting 21.2 percent.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 60, Duquesne 46
- Both teams came out sluggish to start the second half with the Flyers not scoring until free throws from Madol with 7:39 to go in the third.
- Madol followed that up with an and-one to give her double digits in the contest and Dayton a 44-23 lead. She had all of UD's points in the half up to that point.
- The Dukes drew a foul on a three though and made all three free throws to shift the momentum back in their favor for a short time heading to the midway point of the third.
- Dayton was forced to try to add to its lead from the free throw line as fouls piled up.
- Duquesne was slowly chipping away at the gap though and cut it to 12 points with just under three on the clock.
- As soon as the Dukes put a run together though, the Flyers would counter with strong defense and efficient shot selections.
4th Quarter: Dayton 75, Duquesne 58
- The fourth started similar to the third with contested shots and few points in the opening couple of minutes, which Dayton was happy to keep the clock moving while holding onto the lead.
- The Flyers came alive with a drive and finish by senior Nayo Lear to make it 62-48 with 7:30 left in the game.
- Freshman MG Talle followed up with the same idea before graduate student Nicole Stephens added another to make it a 18-point contest, forcing a Duquesne timeout.
- Leung hit her third three of the game with 4:23 on the clock as it hit the media timeout in a 71-52 ball game.
- While Duquesne went for big plays, Dayton was looking to run the rest of the time out.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
46-34– Last time the two teams met, Duquesne outrebounded Dayton, 43-32. Tonight however, the Flyers outrebounded the Dukes, 46-34.
15, 8, 6 –
Olivia Leung had season-highs of 15 points, three made threes, eight rebounds, and a career-high six assists.
34 to 17 – The Flyers outscored the Dukes 34-17 in points off the bench.
17 – Dayton scored 17 points off 13 Duquesne turnovers.
