DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team hosted the University of Rhode Island Sunday afternoon on CBS Sports Network and suffered a tough home defeat.
The Flyers (10-10, 3-6 A-10) came up just short of the upset while the Rams (18-2, 9-0 A-10) stay unbeaten in A-10 play.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 16, Rhode Island 20
- Dayton and Rhode Island traded shots over the first five minutes of the opening quarter as the game was tied at 10-10 going into the media break.
- Junior Ajok Madol powered the Flyer attack, going 3-for-3 to start the game, for six points.
- The Rams had the advantage on the glass though with a 9-5 margin through the midway.
- URI managed to put a run together and led by four at the end of the first.
- UD shot 44 percent overall, but did not attempt a free throw, while Rhody shot 40 percent, but was 3-of-4 at the charity stripe.
- Six different Flyers scored in the first.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 29, Rhode Island 33
- Graduate student Nicole Stephens hit a pullup jumper at the top of the key on the first possession of the second to set the tone for UD and make it a two-point game.
- The Rams answered though with a three at the 6:56 mark to make it a 25-21 contest.
- Neither team was willing to budge as the game stayed close past the midway points.
- Sophomore Olivia Leung drilled a huge three with 4:42 to go to put UD up 27-26.
- An 8-0 run during a 2:39 scoring drought for the Rams gave Dayton a three-point advantage.
- Madol became the first player in double figures with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
- Rhody came alive though and went on a 7-0 run during a 3:09 drought for UD and pulled back ahead 33-29 with under a minute to go.
- The Flyers matched the Rams with 13 points in the second quarter.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 45, Rhode Island 54
- Dayton kept the foot on the gas coming out of the locker room and a three by Stephens with 8:16 on the clock made it a 36-35 URI lead.
- Grad student Maliyah Johnson followed suit with her first made field goal of the game, a three to tie it up at 38-38.
- As we approached the midway point of the quarter, Rhode Island had pulled ahead by four despite going 1-for-7 from the field.
- URI went on another run however and pushed its lead to seven once again, 47-40 with just under two to go.
- The Flyers battled to finish the quarter strong and tried to take momentum into the final 10 minutes.
4th Quarter: Dayton 66, Rhode Island 79
- Rhode Island pushed the margin to double-digits at 56-45, but sophomore Olivia Leung earned an and-one to pull back within single digits. She became the second Flyer in double figures.
- Another layup by Stephens pulled them back even closer as it was 56-50 as we passed the eight-minute mark.
- The 7-0 Dayton run forced a Rhody timeout with 7:23 on the clock and the score 56-52.
- Both teams got to the bonus early and it looked like whoever was the most productive at the free throw line would prevail in the end.
- Maliyah Johnson nailed her second three of the game with 5:44 on the clock to make it a one-point contest.
- At the media break, it remained a one-point game, 61-60.
- Rhode Island went on another 6-0 run over 1:13 though to extend it to 67-60.
- In the end, the Rams managed to close out the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
43% to 41% - Dayton outshot Rhode Island 43 percent on the game compared to 41 percent.
13 –
Olivia Leung and
Ajok Madol both scored 13 points apiece to lead UD.
9 and 9 –
Fatima Ibrahim was just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
12 to 6 – The Rams recorded 12 assists while the Flyers had just six.
39-33 – URI outrebounded UD 39-33.
