Men’s Basketball Surges Past Davidson, 70-59

Jaiun Simon Led in Rebounds and Recorded His First Career Double-Double

DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's basketball team rode a late wave of momentum to down Davidson, 70-59, at the Epicenter of College Basketball, UD Arena, on Sunday evening.
 
The Flyers (16-9, 7-5 A-10) used a 7-0 run over 46 seconds late in the second half to drop a pesky Davidson (15-10, 6-6 A-10). Redshirt sophomore Jaiun Simon registered his first career double-double, pulling down a career-high 13 boards and scoring 11 points.

Junior De'Shayne Montgomery led the Flyers with 13 points in the game, while sophomore Amaël L'Etang added 12 for his fifth-straight double-digit scoring effort. Sophomore Bryce Heard also finished in double-digits, adding 10. Senior Keonte Jones set a new high as a Flyer with six assists

Dayton dominated the glass, out-rebounding Davidson 39-18 for the widest margin of the season. The Flyers shot 45.8% from the floor for the game and 33.3% from three, while the Wildcats shot 44% overall and 38.1% from downtown.
 
First Half – Dayton 34, Davidson 26
  • Sophomore Amaël L'Etang opened the scoring for the Flyers at 17:56 with an easy layup below the hoop.
  • The snag from Graduate Keonte Jones led to a slam dunk from Junior De'Shayne Montgomery.
  • Jones crashed the boards and defeated the Davidson defense.
  • A long pass from Redshirt Sophomore Jauin Simon gave Montgomery the opening for a corner three-pointer to bring the Flyers into the lead. 
  • After three offensive rebounds in a row, Jones assisted Senior Jordan Derkack for a second-chance lay-up in the paint.
  • Another assist from Jones led to an and-one opportunity for Simon. Three points from Simon put the Flyers at a 15-9 lead over the Wildcats.
  • Quick passes among the team led to a jump shot by Simon, pushing the Flyers to a 5-point lead.
  • L'Etang was on fire, hitting a three and two lay-ups for seven points in under two minutes, bringing the Flyers to a 24-20 lead.
  • A foul by Davidson brought Bennett to the line for a one-and-one, putting two more points on the board for the Flyers.
  • Montgomery hyped up the crowd following a dunk heading into a timeout.
  • Derkack stayed loaded, rebounded, and succeeded, leading the Flyers to an 8-point lead.
  • After being fouled on his jump shot, Derkack followed it up with an easy and-one behind the line.
  • The Flyers led by 8 heading into halftime.
Second Half – Dayton 70, Davidson 59
  • Bennett opened the scoring for the half with a lay-up to bring the Flyers to a 10-point lead. 
  • Montgomery drained a corner three with ease to bring the crowd to their feet.
  • Jones stayed patient before getting the go-ahead pass for a three-point splash.
  • A tight pass under the basket from Bennett gave Simon a way for a quick lay-up to keep the Flyers' lead strong.
  • Heard with a jump shot, followed by two good free throws just a minute later, brought the Flyers to a 9-point lead over the Wildcats. 48-39.
  • Sophomore Bryce Heard, with a lay-up in the paint, brought the Flyers to a 4-point lead with just over 4 minutes left in the half.
  • Heard is on fire, shooting two good free throws to bring him to 10 points in the second half. 
  • The crowd got loud as Bennett loaded up and drained a three to bring the Flyers to 60 points.
  • Simon hit a tip-in lay-up after securing his 12th rebound of the game.
  • Montgomery got a steal, bringing the ball up the court where he hit a dunk that brought the arena to their feet, and gave the Flyers a 10-point lead with under three minutes left of play.
  • Derkack took a hard foul and made both of his free throws. The Flyers led 66-57.
  • With just under a minute left in the game, Bennett and Simon went to the line back-to-back to give the Flyers four points and bring the lead to 11 points.
  • The Flyers secured the victory by 11 points.

  • 6 - rebounds in the first half for redshirt sophomore Jaiun Simon, pulling down as many as the entire Davidson team in the first half.
  • 93.8- shooting percentage from the free-throw line (21-24) for UD
  • 21 - Dayton was +21 in the rebound column, its biggest advantage of the season and just the 10th time the Flyers out-rebounded an opponent by 20-or-more since 2005.
