DAVIDSON, N.C. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team went to North Carolina Saturday and suffered a 79-67 defeat to Davidson College.
The Flyers (14-13, 7-9 A-10) were without multiple players and the Wildcats (18-11, 10-6 A-10) took advantage on their home court.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 12, Davidson 20
- Davidson was the first to score on the opening possession to take the early lead.
- Sophomores Molly O'Riordan and Olivia Leung answered for Dayton to give the Flyers a 5-4 advantage by the 7:58 mark.
- The Wildcats countered with a 9-0 run to pull ahead 13-4 before a couple of free throws from senior Shantavia Dawkins ended the rally midway through the first.
- UD struggled during a 1-for-9 stretch as Davidson extended its lead to seven, 16-9.
- O'Riordan and Leung led the way with four points each in the opening 10 minutes.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 27, Davidson 46
- Davidson earned an and-one in the first minute of the second quarter and took its biggest lead up to that point, 23-12.
- Dawkins recorded an and-one of her own a minute later to help spark a rally for UD.
- The Flyers managed to hold the Wildcats scoreless for two minutes, but the skid did not last longer than that as they pushed the margin back to double-digits midway through the second.
- A pair of free throws by grad student Maliyah Johnson at the 4:2 mark ended a nearly four-minute drought for Dayton.
- Junior Ajok Madol put a run together on her own, scoring five straight points for the Flyers.
- Lear, Madol, and Dawkins all had five points each to lead UD while O'Riordan and Leung had four apiece.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 40, Davidson 65
- Both teams talked at half about getting to the basket and both teams utilized that early in the second half.
- O'Riordan took that to hear and scored the first four points for UD in the paint.
- Davidson pushed its lead to 23 points, 54-31, with just under seven on the clock.
- Dawkins followed suit for Dayton, taking it to the hoop and getting to the free throw line.
- At the media break, the Flyers faced a 57-32 deficit.
- Dayton continued to pound the ball inside, only attempting two threes the entire quarter.
4th Quarter: Dayton 67, Davidson 79
- The fourth quarter started slow for both squads, but it was UD that was the first to score with a basket by Maliyah Johnson followed by a three from Leung.
- The Flyers used 5-0 run to cut the margin to under 20 points with just over six to go.
- O'Riordan's bucket at the 6:10 mark made her the first Flyer in double digits. Junior Ajok Madol joined her less than a minute later to give her 11 points as well.
- Maliyah Johnson provided another and-one for Dayton to tie a season-high eight points.
- Despite the score, the Flyers continued to battle on both ends of the floor and narrowed the margin to single digits down the final stretch.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
42 – Dayton outscored Davidson 42-3 on points in the paint.

Ajok Madol was just shy of a double-double with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
