The Flyers Earned Their Seventh Road Win

CHICAGO - The University of Dayton women's basketball team traveled to Loyola Chicago University Wednesday night for the final road trip of the regular season, earning a 67-58 victory.

The Flyers (15-13, 8-9 A-10) earned a big win over an Atlantic 10 opponent above them in the standings while the Ramblers (13-15, 9-8 A-10) move the other direction.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 13, Loyola Chicago 10
  • UD took no time to get on the board as sophomore Olivia Leung nailed a three on the opening possession of the game. Loyola answered less than a minute later though to even the score at 3-3.
  • After that though the scoring slowed as both teams started to get sloppy with the ball, resulting in multiple turnovers.
  • Leung drove and scored her second bucket just after the midway point to tie it up at 5-5.
  • Junior Fatima Ibrahim knocked down a couple of free throws out of the break to make it a one-point game and put her on the scoresheet as well.
  • A putback at the 2:10 mark by Ibrahim gave UD the 11-10 lead before a putback by Leung made it a 6-0 Flyer run.
  • Both teams shot 29 percent in the opening 10 minutes.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 29, Loyola Chicago 30
  • Senior Nayo Lear continued to push the tempo for UD and stepped up on the first play of the second and drilled a three at the top of the key to make it 16-10.
  • Junior Ajok Madol followed suit with another three to force a Rambler timeout with 9:14 on the clock.
  • Loyola's scoring drought didn't end until the 8:32 mark in the second, but Dayton still led 21-12.
  • A fastbreak bucket by sophomore Molly O'Riordan gave the Flyers their first double-digit lead of the game.
  • Dayton's first foul of the game didn't come until 7:02 to play in the second.
  • The Ramblers continued to pick away at the margin then and got the foul line by the 3:55 mark as the Flyers started to get in foul trouble.
  • Loyola fought its way back and tied it up at 27-27 with 2:15 to go in the half thanks to a 10-0 run.
  • A take by Leung ended the drought for the Flyers at the 1:23 mark and kept them ahead, but the Ramblers had the final say and lead at the break.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 46, Loyola Chicago 43
  • Leung picked up where she left off with an and-one to put UD back on top 32-30 in the opening 30 seconds.
  • Loyola quickly countered with a couple of buckets of its own to pull back in front 36-34 as it looked like neither team was going to be able to hold on to a lead for long.
  • Lear hit a crucial three with 5:58 to go, ending the Rambler scoring run. She became the second Flyer in double digits joining Leung.
  • At the media timeout, Loyola led UD 43-42.
  • Senior Shantavia Dawkins had a nice take in transition to give Dayton a 44-43 advantage with just over a minute to go.
  • On the final possession of the third, Lear found a streaking Ibrahim in the paint to cap a 7-0 run and make it a three-point UD lead.
4th Quarter: Dayton 67, Loyola Chicago 58
  • Loyola was the first to strike the fourth on a three pointer, tying the game up with 8:44 to go.
  • Grad student Nicole Stephens showed her veteran presence with a pull up jumper to put UD on the board in the fourth.
  • The two teams traded buckets over the next few minutes as both teams were showing postseason energy for this contest.
  • At the media break, UD held a narrow 54-52 advantage and 4:55 on the clock.
  • Lear slowed the pace down and scored with little left on the shot clock to make it a five-point Dayton lead.
  • The Flyers' 10-0 run over nearly five minutes clinched the road win for the visitors.
