DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team hosted VCU Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. at UD Arena in the regular season finale. It was Senior Day, with a pregame ceremony that took place prior to the game.
The Flyers (16-13, 9-9 A-10) took down the Rams (8-22, 4-14 A-10), playing a strong game on both offense and defense.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 17, VCU 20
- Graduate Maliyah Johnson opened up scoring for the Flyers with a quick and easy layup.
- Sophomore Olivia Leung stepped behind the stripe and made two good free throws.
- Senior Nayo Lear found an opening to bring the ball to the rim, scoring a fastbreak layup at 7:13.
- Sophomore Ajok Madol got the steal to drive the ball up the court for a fastbreak layup.
- Graduate Nicole Stephens sank a jumper, which brought the Flyers to a 10-9 lead over the Rams.
- Stephens got the defensive rebound, giving her the opportunity to take the ball up the court and get the Flyers another two points with her turnaround jumper.
- Junior Jayda Johnson brought the ball back out of an opponent's turnover and scored a three-point jumper.
- Senior Shantavia Johnson makes a jumper with 11 seconds left in the first quarter.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 37, VCU 30
- Lear hit a jumper in the paint, which made the arena light up with energy.
- Assisted by junior Jayda Johnson, Madol put up a fast break lay-up with ease to bring the Flyers back into the lead. 21-20, Flyers.
- Stephens, leading her team in points, sank a turnaround jumper in the paint.
- Sophomore Molly O'Riordan made a second-chance layup at 6:11 to put the Flyers five points above the Rams.
- Leung drained a killer three-point jumper to make it a six-point game.
- O'Riordan shot a perfect second-chance jumper at 3:40.
- Leung went 2-for-2 behind the line, which brought the Flyers' lead to 34-30.
- Ibrahim made two appearances behind the line in the final minute of the quarter, making four good free throws for the Flyers.
- Johnson shot a second-chance jumper, which closed out the second quarter with a seven-point lead.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 60, VCU 45
- Lear opened the quarter with a layup under the basket to give the Flyers a nine-point lead.
- Madol sank two three-point jumpers in the third minute of the quarter, bringing the Flyers to 47 points over the Rams' 37.
- Lear shot a turnaround jumper in the paint, which made the crowd go wild.
- Leung followed up her three-pointer with a layup off the fast break to make a 15-point score gap.
- Lear, from behind the line, made two good free throws with five minutes left in the third quarter.
- Madol got the steal to turn around and score a layup for the Flyers.
- Lear sank a jumper three-pointer at 4:09 to bring the Flyers to a 58-37 lead.
- Lear found an opening under the basket to get a pass to Ibrahim, who put up a quick and easy layup.
4th Quarter: Dayton 79, VCU 62
- Stephens got fouled on her made jumper to give her an and-one opportunity, which put three points on the board in the first 12 seconds of fourth-quarter play.
- Madol, with her feet behind the stripe, sank two good free throws, which brought the Flyers to 65-47.
- Just minutes later, Madol followed up her fourth-quarter scoring with a swished three-point jumper. The Flyers lead 68-49.
- Assisted by Leung, Ibrahim found the opening to make a layup under the net.
- Leung drained a three-pointer at 3:35 to give the flyers a 19-point lead.
- Ibrahim sank a layup to put the Flyers at 75 points, with under three minutes on the clock.
- Senior Shantavia Dawkins made a driving layup at 1:07 to finish out her Flyer career at home.
- Senior Eleanor Monyek with a lay-up made her final points at home as a Flyer.
