HENRICO, Va. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team opened up the 2026 Atlantic 10 Championship tournament Thursday with a 62-54 win over No. 10 seed George Washington in the second round.
The Flyers (17-13) advance to the A-10 Quarterfinals while the Revolutionaries (15-17) ended their season.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 13, George Washington 14
- Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as the nerves showed.
- Sophomore Molly O'Riordan got the Flyers on the board first with a layup at the 8:57 mark followed by a layup by senior Nayo Lear to put UD up 4-0 in the opening two minutes.
- GW responded though and hit a three with 6:57 to go and took a 6-4 lead.
- By the media timeout, the Flyers trailed the Revs 8-7.
- Junior Jayda Johnson nailed a three at of the break to put UD back on top 10-8.
- The Flyers went cold from the field for the next three minutes before an and-one by grad student Maliyah Johnson made it 13-12 in favor of Dayton.
- GW had the last laugh though and led by one after the first.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 31, George Washington 27
- M. Johnson finished the scoring for Dayton in the first and started it in the second with her second basket of the game to put the Flyers on top once again.
- Junior Fatima Ibrahim followed suit with Dayton finding most of its success in the paint early on.
- Neither team was able to pull away completely despite turnovers mounting for the Revs and Dayton led by four, 22-18, at the 4:44 timeout.
- Grad student Nicole Stephens got an offensive rebound and the putback with 3:21 to play to make it a five-point lead, Dayton's biggest up to that point.
- The Flyers also earned the bonus with 2:25 to go in the half, sending them to the free throw line down the stretch.
- GW was forced to call a timeout amidst a 6-0 Dayton run to put the Flyers ahead nine.
- Eight different Flyers scored in the first half led by five points from four different players.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 48, George Washington 43
- The Revs struck first in the second half to cut it to a one-possession game in the opening minute, 31-29.
- O'Riordan stayed aggressive on the other end and earned a trip to the foul line and a contested bucket the following possession to keep UD ahead.
- M. Johnson nailed another three with 5:20 on the clock to end the GW run and give her eight points in the contest.
- That sparked a 9-0 run over 1:54, putting Dayton up seven midway through the third.
- UD quickly turned that into a double-digit advantage as we approached the final two minutes of the quarter.
4th Quarter: Dayton 62, George Washington 54
- Dayton looked to lock in defensively and slow the pace down to fit its tempo with a five-point lead.
- M. Johnson broke the skid with a pullup jumper in the key with 7:43 on the clock to make it 50-43.
- At the media timeout, it was 58-48 in Dayton's favor with just 2:30 left in regulation.
- The Flyers were on a 4-for-4 stretch and had a 10-point lead to lean on down the final few minutes.
- In the end, Dayton knocked down its free throws to move on to the next round.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
25-9 – Dayton scored 25 points off the bench compared to just nine for GW.

Maliyah Johnson scored a new season high with 14 points while
Ajok Madol matched her with 14 of her own.
33.9 – The Flyers held the Revs to just 33.9 percent shooting while hitting 45.7 percent on their own.
13-0 – UD had a 13-0 fast break points advantage.
