Women’s Basketball Powers To Road Win At La Salle

Four Flyers Scored In Double Digits

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Dayton women's basketball team tipped-off a two-game road stretch in the city of brotherly love Wednesday with a 68-60 win.

The Flyers (12-11, 5-7 A-10) earned an important Atlantic 10 victory while the Explorers (12-11, 5-7 A-10) drop in the league standings.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 20, La Salle 17
  • The hosts scored off the opening tip to take the initial lead in the contest.
  • The Flyers' first points off the game came at the 7:57 mark on a free throw by sophomore Olivia Leung. Dayton still only trailed through 3-1.
  • Fellow sophomore Molly O'Riordan knocked down a couple of free throws of her own to tie it up at 5-5 with 6:35 to go.
  • She followed that up with a big three to make it an 8-7 La Salle lead as we reached the midway point in the opening quarter.
  • The Explorers went on a little run though and pushed the margin to 14-8 as the clock ticked under three to play.
  • Leung nailed a three to end the skid for the Flyers and make it a three-point contest.
  • Another three from Leung gave UD the 17-15 lead before a three from graduate student Nicole Stephens gave them a three-point advantage.
  • Leung had nine points in eight minutes of action.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 26, La Salle 25
  • La Salle managed to take the lead back 21-20 in the first minute and a half of the second.
  • Nice ball movement by the Flyers finished in another bucket from O'Riordan to make it 22-21 in Dayton's favor with just seven left in the half.
  • By the media timeout, the score was 23-22 La Salle as both teams traded leads back and forth.
  • The Flyers only had one made field goal in the quarter until a drive and bucket by senior Shantavia Dawkins at the 2:58 mark made it 24-25.
  • An offensive rebound and putback by junior Fatima Ibrahim put UD back in front 26-25 with 1:41 to go.
  • Dayton shot 34.6 percent in the first half while holding La Salle to 31.0 percent and 1-of-8 from three.
  • Leung led the Flyers with nine points while O'Riordan had seven points.
3rd Quarter: Dayton
  • The second half started with a bucket by the Explorers to take the lead back, but O'Riordan knocked down Dayton's first made free throws since the first quarter.
  • After a low-scoring second, we saw a flurry of points to start the second half.
  • Senior Nayo Lear scored a couple of tough baskets in the paint to put UD ahead 35-31 with just under eight to go.
  • La Salle hit just its second three of the game to make it a one-point contest, 37-36.
  • O'Riordan became the first Flyer in double digits, achieving that mark for the sixth time this season.
  • Leung hit a corner three off the feed from Lear out of the media timeout to extend the margin to six. She became the second Flyer in double figures.
  • Freshman MG Talle came off the bench and added a couple of buckets to give Dayton its first double-digit lead of the contest, 47-37, with just over two to go.
4th Quarter: Dayton 68, La Salle 60
  • O'Riordan showed some real toughness on an early possession in the fourth, getting three attempts at the bucket and finally got the third one to go after a couple of offensive boards.
  • By the eight minute mark, the Explorers had closed the gap to three, 49-46.
  • Neither team was willing to budge over the next few minutes as the game stayed within a possession.
  • Dayton looked to slow the pace down and Lear took it upon herself as leader and team captain to protect the ball and get to the basket.
  • Stephens drilled a three with 2:35 on the clock to make it an eight-point game and give the Flyers a more comfortable lead.
  • With the momentum, Dayton was comfortable running out the clock.
