Women’s Basketball Wins Thriller At Saint Joseph’s

The Flyers Went 2-0 In Philadelphia This Week

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Dayton women's basketball team returned to Philadelphia for the second time this week and went 2-0 with a 75-73 win at Saint Joseph's University.

The Flyers (13-11, 6-7 A-10) completed the city sweep while the Hawks (15-8, 6-6 A-10) move to .500 in Atlantic 10 play.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 18, Saint Joseph's 14
  • Saint Joe's took the initial lead with a contested bucket as Dayton struggled to get things going on its end of the floor.
  • The hosts took a 6-0 lead through the seven minute mark as the visiting Flyers still battled for their first points.
  • Sophomore Olivia Leung nailed the corner three with 6:51 to go, putting UD on the board.
  • Fellow sophomore Molly O'Riordan followed suit with a three of her own to tie the game up at 8-8.
  • Graduate student Nicole Stephens hit a couple of touch jumpers to put UD up 12-8 as we passed the halfway point in the first.
  • Junior Jayda Johnson drilled a pair of threes as the clock ticked under a minute to put Dayton ahead by six.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 35, Saint Joseph's 33
  • Saint Joseph's hit a three on the first possession of the second, but Jayda Johnson answered once again with her third three of the game, giving her nine points.
  • The two teams traded buckets over the next two minutes with both teams getting hot from the field while Dayton managed to keep one step ahead of Saint Joseph's.
  • Stephens hit a runner to put the Flyers 31-25 as we passed the midway point.
  • Saint Joseph's managed to tie the game up at 35-35 as we approached halftime.
  • The Hawks didn't get called for their first foul until the 1:40 mark in the second quarter.
  • Senior Nayo Lear drove and stopped on a dime for a pullup jumper in the closing seconds to put Dayton up two at the break.
  • UD had seven assists to just six turnovers in the first half, but Saint Joseph's had a 26-12 points in the paint advantage.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 60, Saint Joseph's 51
  • The Hawks scored first to start the second half, tying the game up at 35, before a three from Leung put the Flyers back ahead. She scored the first five points of the half for Dayton.
  • With 7:46 on the clock, Stephens converted an and-one to give Dayton its first double-digit lead, 45-35.
  • Saint Joes quickly responded with a run of its own to close the gap back to five, 45-40, and over six to go in the quarter.
  • It was then Stephens turn to score five straight for UD as the Flyers led by five at the media timeout.
  • Graduate student Maliyah Johnson came off the bench and hit a three late in the shot clock to put Dayton up eight.
  • Jayda Johnson followed up with her fourth made three, forcing a SJU timeout with 3:32 to go and a 53-42 Dayton advantage.
  • Saint Joseph's was not going away though and kept putting little runs together to try and claw back into the game.
  • O'Riordan earned an and-one with eight seconds left to give them 60 points.
4th Quarter: Dayton 75, Saint Joseph's 73
  • Neither team scored in the opening two minutes of the fourth as the game reached a frenetic pace.
  • O'Riordan showed up big on the defensive end as well, recording a couple of important blocks during that span.
  • O'Riordan was also the first one to score in the fourth with a layup off the feed from junior Ajok Madol at the 7:36 mark.
  • The Hawks narrowed the margin to six before another three from Jayda Johnson gave her a career-high 15 points and five threes.
  • The score remained a three-point game as we approached the one-minute mark.
  • Saint Joes cut it to two, 72-70, with :25 left.
  • Dayton was able to hit one free throw to get it back to three points and a stop on the other end.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
5 – Jayda Johnson hit a career-high five threes for a career-high 15 points.
18 – Nicole Stephens was just shy of a season high with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
10 and 9 – Molly O'Riordan was also just shy of a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds and 10 points.
13 – UD had just 13 turnovers in the game, its second-lowest total of the season.
54.9% - Dayton shot 54.9 percent from the field and held Saint Joseph's to 46.3 percent.
47.4% - The Flyers also shot a season-high 47.4 percent from three-point range.

The Flyers will return home to host George Mason University Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. for UD's annual School Day game.
